Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane, Indiana
The Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) needed a reliable mobile computing solution that could work in extreme weather and combat conditions, providing maintenance data and support remotely in near real time. NSWC deployed Panasonic Toughbook rugged laptops with port replicators, Logitech ClickSmart cameras and Labtec headsets to ships and submarines. Forces using the system were able to solve complicated maintenance and repair issues by accessing pertinent technical information and contacting subject matter experts anywhere in the world. The sturdy Toughbook laptops provided sailors with a method of accessing the information they needed and gave the NSWC a reliable computing solution at a lower total life-cycle cost.
NSWC chose to deploy Panasonic Toughbook®18s with port replicators, Logitech ClickSmart cameras and Labtec headsets. Prior to deploying the units, the Distance Support team tested the Toughbooks and assessed them for compliance with standards and operational procedures. The team was very impressed with the abuse the Toughbooks took without failing. The deployed units continued to prove themselves whileoperated by multiple users in extreme conditions aboard US Navy ships and submarines. The US Navy has seen an improvement in the process, which, in return, has increased operational availability and reduced total cost of ownership. Overall, the Toughbook 18 has provided NSWC with a reliable computing solution and a lower total cost of ownership. It has also improved the quality of service and life for the sailors.
