Public Safety and Security Solutions

The Department of Homeland Security provides many security and safety services. These activities are performed under a wide variety of environmental conditions, ranging from dusty desert border crossings to offshore boat inspections in rough seas. Regardless of the conditions, rugged Panasonic Toughbook® mobile computers and Panasonic Arbitrator mobile digital video systems deliver dependable security solutions to help ensure national security and public safety.

Policing Air Force bases, including one of the largest fighter bases in the Air Combat Command (3,100 acres), requires a solution that keeps security personnel in constant contact with each other to assure security is not compromised. The solution also needs to provide the ability to effectively capture, store and manage video evidence across this large territory in all weather conditions.

The Air Force relies on Panasonic Toughbook mobile computers and Panasonic Arbitrator mobile digital video systems in their patrol vehicles to help keep their bases secure. In addition, Panasonic Arbitrator digital video systems are installed at the bases' entry gates to monitor people entering and leaving the premises at all times. Toughbook computers with scanners are also used at the gates to read the Department of Defense Common Access Card (CAC) identification cards of visitors and personnel entering the bases. With its daylight-readable screen, all-weather, rugged design and compact form factor, Toughbook mobile computers are ideal for greeting visitors at their vehicles and running security checks in real time.

The U.S. Coast Guard is well known for its search and rescue (SAR) expertise — responding to about 60,000 emergency calls annually. A typical SAR response may involve ships, aircraft and road vehicles operating in all kinds of weather, terrain and sea conditions. Coast Guard equipment must be able to withstand the ocean's harsh, saline environment while providing stable, reliable GPS and mapping assistance for a swift and reliable response.

The Coast Guard uses MIL-STD-810 certified Panasonic Toughbook computer with embedded wireless and GPS as its mobile computing solution. The Toughbook solution enables greater geographic coverage, moving maps and custom software that assist rescuers in locating rescue sites faster. With daylight-readable touch screens, spill resistant keyboards and shock-mounted hard drives, Toughbook computers offer unparalleled ruggedness, equating to longer uptimes and a lower total lifecycle cost. This reliability makes Toughbook computers the Coast Guard's mobile computing solution of choice for search and rescue operations; day or night, in any kind of weather, on land or sea.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Safety Inspection laboratories have a big job, monitoring food production processes nationwide — identifying, evaluating and responding to potential food-borne hazards or threats to the food supply. USDA food inspectors visit meat packing plants, canneries, and other food processing facilities testing for moisture, protein, fat and sodium content, as well as certain classes of chemical residues. Inspectors also investigate outbreaks caused by salmonella and escherichia coli (E. coli). Inspections using mobile computers can take place in freezing cold meat warehouses or hot commercial kitchens in all regions of the country. With inspectors traveling and working in such challenging environments, the USDA needs mobile computers that can withstand the constant exposure to temperature changes, moisture, chemicals and biological contaminants without failing.

Panasonic Toughbook mobile computers are engineered to handle the drops, bumps and spills they face during plant inspections. Toughbook computers have magnesium alloy cases, shock-mounted hard drives, and water-tight ports to protect against dirt, grease and fluids. Further, the spill resistant keyboards can be easily sanitized if exposed to bacterial contaminants.

Some models also include touch screens which improve data entry speed and accuracy as well as software navigation. Wireless connectivity allows inspectors to quickly and accurately transfer data to the USDA's central database — saving time when a warning, recall or other urgent action is required. These benefits combine to streamline the inspection and investigation process, boosting productivity and reducing costs.
