MIL-STD-810F is a series of testing standards and procedures issued by the United States Army, in order to identify products approved for use by all agencies and organizations within the Department of Defense. While these procedures were initially created specifically for the military, they have since become an important benchmark for numerous public and private sector organizations to verify if products will withstand challenging conditions throughout their service life.

Mobile computers are rated according to international standards for ingress protection (IP). IP codes classify the degrees of protection provided by electrical enclosures from dust, water and impact. The numbers following the letters "IP" represent the specific degree of protection provided by electrical enclosures. The Toughbook H1 is IP65 certified by a national independent third party lab following IEC 60529 Procedure 13.4, Category 2. The first digit (6) indicates the ingress of dust at a level that will not have a harmful effect on the operation of the unit. The second digit (5) indicates that water sprayed from all directions will not compromise the computer's functioning.

Like all Toughbook mobile computers, the Toughbook H1 is designed to meet and exceed a variety of standards for performance, durability and environmental impact.

As the leader in manufacturing durable and reliable mobile computers, Panasonic performs more than 500 checks and tests on every Toughbook computer. Also, the Toughbook H1 is IP65 certified and designed to meet MIL-STD-810F requirements, testing standards and procedures issued by the United States Army.

The Toughbook H1, a fully-rugged device, can withstand the typical environment of a healthcare facility, such as dropping the device from a patient’s bed (about a 3 foot drop), spilling water or other fluids on the device and bumping the device on edges, doors and other surfaces throughout the day.

“Semi-rugged” devices don’t offer the extreme level of durability that the Toughbook H1 does. Therefore, they may not be able to handle the demanding and harsh environment of healthcare settings.

Panasonic offers multiple healthcare devices ranging in different levels of ruggedness. The Toughbook H1, an ultra-mobile-rugged device, has about the same level of durability as the fully-rugged class of Toughbook laptops. It offers more durability than the semi-rugged and business-rugged line of Toughbook mobile computers.

Healthcare devices in different categories of ruggedness include:

  • The fully-rugged Toughbook 19 – The fully convertible Toughbook 19 is rugged and lightweight. It offers enhanced patient care for viewing medical records, x-rays and lab results.
  • The semi-rugged Toughbook 52 – Even though users may carry it around by its built-in handle, the durable and reliable Toughbook 52 is ideal for the rollercoaster type ride of a cart through a hospital facility. It is specifically engineered to endure the harsh, day-to-day environment as a cart-based solution for nurses delivering secure, high quality bedside care, or as any everyday desktop replacement for administration.
  • The business-rugged Toughbook T8 – At only 3.3 lbs, it’s extremely portable and the extra-long battery life make it perfect for everything from patient rounds in a facility to patient visits in the home. Healthcare providers can update and transfer patient data virtually anywhere.
  • The ultra-mobile-rugged Toughbook U1 – The ultra-portable Toughbook U1 allows users to make changes to patient charts, receive up to date lab results and perform clinical tasks quickly and efficiently, all without having to return to a desk.

Panasonic engineered a fanless design in an effort to minimize the spread of dust, debris and other infectious particles.

The low-powered Intel Atom processor and Panasonic’s experience in thermal management technologies allows the Toughbook H1 to maintain a low temperatures without the use of a fan.

Fully sealed means that the unit’s entire surface area is completely void of ports, gaps and crevices. The Toughbook H1 includes a fanless and portless design, smooth surfaces with sealed buttons and a gapless LCD screen.

A semi-sealed design cannot guarantee resistance to dust, water and liquids. Furthermore, semi-sealed devices can be difficult to disinfect as germs, bacteria and other infectious particles may get trapped in between gaps and crevices.
