Tips to Make a Difference

Technological advances are making it easier than ever to reduce carbon emissions. From power management to digital downloads, consumers are finding that small steps that help reduce the collective carbon footprint also save time and money. Here are some eco-friendly computer tips on how consumers can join the digital revolution and reduce their personal impact:

Manage Power Expenditures

Most people know that turning off computers and other electronic equipment saves power. What many do not know is that a large amount of power is used even when the devices are off. This "vampire load" can account for up to 40 percent of the total power used by home electronics.

To cut off all power consumption, unplug the computer. As an alternative, use power strips that detect if a computer is powered on or off. If it is off, the strip will cut the power to all peripherals. However, if a computer must remain on, choosing power settings that allow the device to hibernate can reduce consumption up to 80 percent. Also, before shopping for a computer, visit www.energystar.gov, which contains a list of energy-efficient makes and models.

Switch To An LCD Monitor

Flat-panel Liquid Crystal Display monitors use significantly less energy and generate less heat than bulky CRTs, making LCDs a smart green choice. When replacing a CRT monitor, though, make sure it doesn't end up in a landfill. A simple online search for "electronic recycling" or "monitor recycling" will help locate organizations that recycle computer peripherals.

Extend Computer Life Cycles

To extend a computer's life span, optimize system performance by routinely running anti-virus programs, defrag software, registry cleaners and other software utilities (many of which are free). Also, instead of disposing of a computer, consider passing it on to a child or a local school. Don't forget to wipe the hard drive and perform a clean install of the operating system before giving it away. Learn more about Panasonic's asset recovery, recycling and other professional services.

e-Recycling

When it is time to retire a computer, the best thing a user can do is recycle it appropriately. Many computers contain lead, mercury and other substances that are harmful to the environment. Contact the electronics manufacturer to find out if it has a recycling program. If the manufacturer doesn't, there are many community centers that recycle computers and other electronics. Cut Consumption

Here are some more green tips that can reduce real-world waste:

  • Read the news online. Many newspapers and magazines now produce online versions. Utilizing online subscriptions reduces paper usage.
  • Print green. There are many ways to save paper and ink when printing. One is to select the "printer-friendly version" option, which saves paper by printing a Web page without the images. Other alternatives include printing on both sides and printing documents in "fast," "draft" or "grayscale" mode. Also, use recycled paper made with at least 30 percent post-consumer-content. Finally, be sure to recycle used ink cartridges.
  • Paperless billing. Nearly all major utilities, banks and credit card companies offer online bill payment services. Both of these options save paper, postage expenses and time.
  • Purchase products online. In addition to saving time and avoiding shopping hassles, online shopping saves gas and eliminates the pollution involved in driving to the mall. While there are carbon dioxide emissions associated with product shipping, more emissions are created by trips to multiple stores. Also, avoid creating more waste by requesting environmentally-friendly packaging.
  • Work from home. Many companies now allow employees to work from home. Not only does the practice provide greater flexibility and productivity, it also keeps more cars off the road — which reduces traffic and lowers carbon emissions.
  • Join the digital revolution. From song and movie downloads to digital cameras and GPS systems, the digital age provides new alternatives for purchasing hardcopy materials and packaging.

Going green has never been simpler. By following the tips above, consumers can easily reduce their environmental footprint.
