U.S. Army Biometric Automated Toolset (BAT)
During the campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan, the U.S. Army needed to record detainees and other persons of interest for identification and tracking purposes. Biometric Automated Toolset (BAT) is a portable system composed of mobile computers and supporting devices that capture a person's features, such as facial details and iris identification. BAT also incorporates an exceptionally accurate fingerprint capture and identification engine.
In 2006, BAT program administrators evaluated the Panasonic Toughbook semi-rugged products against several other computers and selected the Toughbook for its ability to meet tough standards for ruggedness, execution and low total cost of ownership. In less than two years, more than 1,450 Toughbook notebooks have been deployed.

U.S. Army Project Manager Rapid Equipping Force (PM REF)
The Project Manager Rapid Equipping Force (PM REF) provides technical solutions to U.S. soldiers in the field in order to rapidly increase mission capability and security.
One such technology was a tool created by Cross Match, a biometric technologies company. By integrating the Toughbook fully-rugged product line, Cross Match packaged a mobile solution that provides access to criminal background checks through the FBI’s Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS).
