BIOS

[+] Is my CD/DVD drive bootable?
When the laptop is first powered on, the Panasonic name appears in white lettering, with the phrase 'Press F2 to enter Setup' directly below it. When this phrase appears on the screen, immediately press F2 on your keyboard. It might be necessary to press the key more than once.

CD-ROM Drive (CDD)/DVD

[+] Is my CD/DVD drive bootable?
Yes. To make your CD-ROM/DVD drive bootable, follow the procedure below:

  1. When the laptop is first powered on, the Panasonic name appears in white lettering with the phrase 'Press F2 to enter Setup' directly below it. When this phrase appears on the screen, immediately press F2 on your keyboard. It may be necessary to press the key more than once.

  2. Using the Right Arrow key on your keyboard, highlight the Boot menu heading.

  3. Use the Up Arrow key or the Down Arrow key to select [CD/DVD Drive].

  4. Then using the F6 key, move [CD/DVD Drive] up the list to the number [1.] listing.

  5. Press the Esc key once.

  6. Save Values and Exit should be highlighted. Press Enter to choose the Save Values and Exit menu item. Press Enter again to confirm this choice. The laptop will automatically reboot.
[+] Why won't DVD movies play on the CF-48?
The DVD option included with certain models of CF-48 requires third-party software. This software effectively takes over the task of decoding the DVD movie from the processor, enabling a smooth stream of video from the DVD disc.

Panasonic currently recommends the WinDVD from interVideo. Links for specific information, including drivers, manuals and pricing, are available directly at the interVideo Internet site at www.intervideo.com.

Floppy Disk Drive (FDD)

[+] Is my FDD/SDD drive bootable?
Yes. To make your FDD/SDD drive bootable, follow the procedure below:

  1. When the laptop is first powered on, the Panasonic name appears in white lettering with the phrase 'Press F2 to enter Setup' directly below it. When this phrase appears on the screen, immediately press F2 on your keyboard. It may be necessary to press the key more than once.

  2. Using the Right Arrow key on your keyboard, highlight the Boot menu heading.

  4. Then, using the F6 key, move [Floppy Drive] up the list to the number [1.] listing.

[+] How do I identify if the CF-48 has an integrated network card?
To identify if your laptop is built with an integrated network card, follow theinstructions listed below to access and review your BIOS for system information:

  1. When thelaptop is first powered on. The Panasonic name appears in whitelettering with the phrase 'Press F2 to enter Setup' directly below it. Whenthis phrase appears on the screen, immediately press F2 on your keyboard. Itmight be necessary to press the key more than once.

  2. Using the Right Arrow key on your keyboard, highlight the advanced menu heading.

  3. If you are able to locate the heading, Modem/LAN, your system was built with an integrated modem/network card.

Keyboard

[+] Why is my keyboard producing the wrong characters when I type?
Make sure that Number Lock is not turned on. (You can tell if Number Lock is turned on by looking for the LED indicatorlight shaped like a padlock with a number 1 in it.) If this light is on, pressthe Num Lk key to turn off Number Lock.

[+] How can I determine a Toughbook mobile computer's series/generation?
There are currently six generations (or Marks) of the CF-48 series Toughbook. The specific Mark can be determined by the first few characters of the model number.

Mark 1 -- CF-48M/N

[+] How can I determine a Toughbook mobile computer's full model number and serial number?
This information is located on a barcode label on the bottom of the Toughbook. The full model number starts with CF-48, followed by several other characters (e.g., CF-48NAKHUDM). The serial number is a string of 10 characters: One number, followed by four letters, followed by five numbers (e.g., 1ABCD12345).

This information can also be found in the BIOS Setup Utility (See BIOS section).

Operating Systems/Drivers

[+] How do I install/update drivers on the CF-48?
All drivers are available for download by following the link below. All the files on this site are .ZIP files or self-extracting files. After downloading, extract its contents to your hard drive.

After extracting, there are generally two ways to install the drivers.

1. Run the setup file.

2. Perform an Update Driver on a device from the Device Manager and point to the folder that contains the extracted driver.

  9. Click "Have Disk" and click "Browse".

  12. If you get a Microsoft warning, select "Yes, Continue anyway".

  13. You may need to restart the computer for the device to work properly.

For Windows 2000

  1. Click Start > Run.

PCMCIA/PC Card--Windows 98/2000

Reinstalling the Original Operating System

[+] How do I reinstall the original operating system?
When the laptop is first powered on, the Panasonic name appears in white lettering with the phrase 'Press F2 to enter Setup' directly below it. When this phrase appears on the screen, immediately press F2 on your keyboard.

Put the Panasonic recovery CD in your drive and use the arrow keys to move to the Boot tab. Change the order of boot so the CD drive boots first. To do this, highlight the CD drive and press F6 until CD drive is the No.1 listing. Press F10 to save your changes, exit and follow the instructions when your CD starts running.

Touchpad/Touchscreen/Digitizer

[+] How do I change my touchpad configuration?
1. Click on Start > Settings > Control Panel.

2. Locate and double-click the Mouse icon.

3. Browse through the Tap and Buttons, Pointers, Motion and General tabs to adjust the touchpad settings to your desired configuration.
[+] How can I disable the scrolling feature on my touchpad?
The touchpad that is installed in the CF-48 uses a driver that emulates an IntelliMouse® (wheel mouse). To disable this feature, follow the procedure below:

1. Locate and double-click the Touchpad icon on the Windows taskbar (located to the left of the system clock). The Mouse Properties window appears.

2. Click on the Scrolling tab.

3. Locate the Horizontal Scrolling checkbox and click it once to remove the check mark.

4. Locate the Vertical Scrolling checkbox and click it once to remove the check mark.

5. Click on the Apply button to accept these changes.

6. Click on the OK button to close the Mouse Properties window.

Universal Serial Bus (USB)

[+] How do I enable the USB port/USB device on my laptop?
This laptop model uses a USB controller chip that is version 1.1-compliant. Please consult the manual that came with the USB device or contact the device manufacturer for further details. Windows 98/2000 automatically recognizes and installs the USB controller and any USB device that is plugged into the USB port, provided the USB device is USB 1.1-compliant.

Note: Windows NT 4.0 does not support the Universal Serial Bus standard.

Video Display Adaptor

[+] How do I toggle the display between the CF-48's LCD and an external monitor/projector?
Pressing FN and F3 at the same time will toggle the Toughbook's display between the Toughbook's LCD, the external monitor/projector and both, simultaneously.

If the LCD does not display properly or there is a 'Video Controller' showing with an error in the Device Manager, install/re-install the Video Driver. Download the appropriate Video Driver from Panasonic's website by following the link below. Extract the contents of the file, then run the Setup file (accept all default settings). You may need to restart the Toughbook.
