CD-ROM Drive (CDD)/DVD

[+] Is my CD/DVD drive bootable?
Yes. The internal CD-ROM/DVD drive is bootable. To boot to your bootable CD-ROM/DVD drive, follow the procedure below:

  1. When the Toughbook is first powered on, the Panasonic name appears in white lettering, with the phrase "Press F2 to enter Setup" directly below it. When this phrase appears on the screen, immediately press F2 on your keyboard. It may be necessary to press the key more than once.

  2. Using the Right Arrow key on your keyboard, highlight the Boot menu heading.

  3. Use the Up Arrow key or the Down Arrow key to select [CD/DVD Drive].

  4. Then, using the F6 key, move [CD/DVD Drive] up the list to the No. 1 listing.

  5. Press the Esc key once.

  6. Save Values and Exit should be highlighted. Press Enter to choose the Save Values and Exit menu item. Press Enter again to confirm this choice. The Toughbook will automatically reboot.

Hard Disk Drive (HDD)

[+] Can I remove the hard drive on a CF-50 Toughbook?
Yes. The hard drive is located on the right side of the unit. Detailed instructions can found in the reference manual, available for download by visiting the Download Center.

Integrated Wireless Modem

[+] How do I connect with my WLAN (Intel® PROset Version 7.x)?
  1. Open your Intel® PROset software and make sure the switch radio is set to "On" on the General tab. If it is not, select On in the lower-right corner.

  2. On the Network tab, click "scan", which will scan for available wireless networks in your are When your network is found, click on it once and click Connect.

  3. Intel® PROset will ask you to create a profile. Click Yes and input your network and security information into the profile.

  4. When you are done, click Finish.

Keyboard

[+] Why is my keyboard producing the wrong characters when I type?
Make sure that Number Lock is not turned on. (You can tell if Number Lock is turned on by looking for the LED indicator light shaped like a padlock with a number 1 in it.) If this light is on, press the Num Lk key to turn off Number Lock.

Model/Serial Number

[+] How can I determine a Toughbook mobile computer's full model number and serial number?
This information is located on a barcode label on the bottom of the Toughbook. The full model number starts with CF-51, followed by several other characters (e.g., CF-51PG4HEBM). The serial number is a string of 10 characters: One number, followed by four letters, followed by five numbers (e.g., 1ABCD12345).

This information can also be found in the BIOS Setup Utility (See BIOS section).
[+] How can I determine a Toughbook mobile computer's series/generation?
There are currently five generations (or Marks) of the CF-50 series Toughbook. The specific Mark can be determined by the first few characters of the model number.

Mark 1 -- CF-50W/Y

Mark 2 -- CF-50A/B/X

Mark 3 -- CF-50D/E/F/G/H

Mark 4 -- CF-50L/M

Mark 5 -- CF-50J/K

[+] How do I install/update drivers on a Toughbook?
All drivers are available for by following the link below. All the files on this site are .ZIP files or self-extracting files. After downloading, extract its contents to your hard drive.

After extracting, there are generally two ways to install the drivers.

1. Run the setup file.

2. Perform an Update Driver on a device from the Device Manager and point to the folder that contains the extracted driver.

PCMCIA/PC Card--Windows 98/2000

[+] What type of PCMCIA cards can I use?
Two types of I, II or type III cardbus cards can be used. Please note that the following types of card are not supported: ZV card, SRAM card, FLASH ROM card (excluding ATA interface type), and other cards that require 12V of operating voltage.

Reinstalling the Original Operating System

[+] How do I reinstall the operating system?
To reinstall your operating system, place the Panasonic recovery CD in your drive. When the laptop is first powered on, the Panasonic name appears in white lettering with the phrase 'Press F2 to enter Setup' directly below it.

When this phrase appears on the screen, immediately press F2 on your keyboard. Use the arrow keys to navigate to the Boot tab. Change the order of boot so the CD drive boots first. To do this, highlight the CD drive and press F6 until CD drive is the No.1 listing. Press F10 to save your changes, exit and follow the instructions when your CD starts running.

Video Display Adaptor

[+] How do I toggle the display between the Toughbook mobile computer's LCD and an external       monitor/projector?

Pressing FN and F3 at the same time will toggle the Toughbook's display between the Toughbook's LCD, the external monitor/projector and both simultaneously.

If the LCD does not display properly or there is a 'Video Controller' showing with an error in the Device Manager, install/re-install the Video Driver. Download the appropriate Video Driver from Panasonic's website. Extract the contents of the file, then run the Setup file (accept all default settings). You may need to restart the Toughbook.
