BIOS

[+] How do I get into the BIOS Setup Utility?
When the laptop is first powered on, the Panasonic name appears in white lettering, with the phrase 'Press F2 to enter Setup' directly below it. When this phrase appears on the screen, immediately press F2 on your keyboard. It might be necessary to press the key more than once.

Please go to the Setup Utility section of the online reference manual for a complete walkthrough of the BIOS Setup Utility.

CD-ROM Drive (CDD)/DVD

[+] Is my CD-ROM/DVD drive bootable?
Yes. Internal CD/DVD drives for the Multimedia Pocket (MP) are bootable. Many (but not all) USB CD-ROM drives are bootable on the CF-30. All Panasonic USB CD-ROM drives are bootable. To boot to your bootable CD-ROM/DVD drive, follow the procedure below:

  1. When the Toughbook is first powered on, the Panasonic name appears in white lettering, with the phrase 'Press F2 to enter Setup' directly below it. When this phrase appears on the screen, immediately press F2 on your keyboard. It may be necessary to press the key more than once.

  2. Using the Right Arrow key on your keyboard, highlight the Boot menu heading.

  3. Use the Up Arrow key or the Down Arrow key to select [CD/DVD Drive].

  4. Then, using the F6 key, move [CD/DVD Drive] up the list to the No. 1 listing.

  5. Press the Esc key once.

  6. Save Values and Exit should be highlighted. Press Enter to choose the Save Values and Exit menu item. Press Enter again to confirm this choice. The Toughbook will automatically reboot.

Hard Disk Drive (HDD)

[+] Can I remove the hard drive on the CF-73 Toughbook?
Yes. The hard drive is located on the left side of the unit. Detailed instructions can found in the reference manual, available for download by following the Download Center.

Integrated Wireless Modem

[+] My EVDO modem is giving me an error 'USB Not Detected' message in the Device Manager, which has       resulted in 'Searching for Modem' or 'Unable to Register' messages.

It is possible to avoid this by ensuring that normal, power-down protocols are followed. It is also important to note that, in the event of this error; the modem is not recoverable by the customer and must be returned to Sierra Wireless via Panasonic. If you see this message, please call 1-800-Laptop5 (800-527-8675).
[+] My EVDO modem does not work. How do I install the software?
Use Add/Remove Programs to uninstall the previous version of Sprint Connection Manager or Verizon Watcher software. Reboot your laptop and turn off your EVDO modem. Reinstall your software and reboot laptop. Make sure the modem is on during installation.

Integrated Wireless Network Interface Card

[+] How do I connect to my network at login with my WLAN?
You will need to enable the Single Sign On (SSO) feature of Intel®PROset. Go to the Control Panel and choose Add/Remove Programs. Find Intel®PROset and click Change/Remove. When the window opens, select Modify. Go to Tools > Administrative Tools > Single Sign On. Open Intel®PROset and configure your settings.
[+] How do I connect with my WLAN (IntelŪPROset Version 11.0)?
Open Intel®PROset software and make sure the switch radio is on. If it is not, select On. In the lower-right corner click Refresh.

When your network is found, click on it once and click Connect.

Intel®PROset will ask you to create a profile. Click Yes and input your network and security information into the profile. When you are done, click Finish.

Keyboard

[+] How do I use the multimedia pocket (MP)?
To remove a multimedia pocket device, turn your laptop over. On the underside of the laptop, locate the release switch and slide it in the direction of the indicator arrow. With both hands, slide the device out of the multimedia pocket. To insert a new device, simply slide the floppy drive, battery or CD/DVD drive into the multimedia pocket by pushing on both corners until it is firmly in place.
[+] Why is my keyboard producing the wrong characters when I type?
Make sure that Number Lock is not turned on. (You can tell if Number Lock is turned on by looking for the LED indicator light shaped like a padlock with a number 1 in it.) If this light is on, press the NumLk key to turn off Number Lock.

Model/Serial Number

[+] How can I determine a Toughbook mobile computer's full model number and serial number?
This information is located on a bar-coded label on the bottom of the Toughbook.

The full model number starts with CF-73, followed by several other characters (e.g., CF-73ECKTJDM). The serial number is a string of 10 characters: One number, followed by four letters, followed by five numbers (e.g., 1ABCD12345).

This information can also be found in the BIOS Setup Utility (See BIOS section).
[+] How can I determine a Toughbook mobile computer's series/generation?
There are currently five generations (or Marks) of the CF-73 series Toughbook. The specific Mark can be determined by the first few characters of the model number.

Mark 1 -- CF-73E/F

Mark 2 -- CF-73J/K

Mark 3 -- CF-73N/Q

Mark 4 -- CF-73S/T/U

Mark 5 -- CF-73X/Y

[+] How do I install/update drivers on a Toughbook?
All drivers are available for download from the Download Center. All the files on this site are .ZIP files or self-extracting files. After downloading, extract its contents to your hard drive.

After extracting, there are generally two ways to install the drivers.

  1. Run the setup file.

  2. Perform an Update Driver on a device from the Device Manager and point to the folder that contains the extracted driver.

How do I install/update drivers if there is no setup program included with the downloaded driver file?

For Windows XP:

  1. Click Start > Run.

  2. Type in devmgmt.msc and click OK to get to the Device Manager.

  3. Right-click on the desired device and click 'Update Driver.'

  4. If asked to connect to the Internet, select 'No, not at this time' and click Next.

  5. Select 'Install from a list or specific location' and click Next.

  6. Select 'Don't search. I will choose the driver to install' and click Next.

  7. If asked for a device type, select the appropriate type and select Next.

  8. (For a modem, select 'modems'; for sound, select 'Sound, video and game controllers'; for hotkey, select 'System devices'; for LAN or WLAN, select 'Network Adapters'; etc.)

  9. Click 'Have Disk,' then click 'Browse.'

  10. Browse to the location of the un-zipped driver files.

  11. Click 'Open,' then click OK and click Next.

  12. If you get a Microsoft warning, select 'Yes, Continue anyway.'

  13. You may need to restart the computer for the device to work properly.

For Windows 2000:

  1. Click Start > Run.

PCMCIA/PC Card--Windows 98/2000

[+] What type of PC cards can I use?
Two type I or type II, or one type III. Please note that the following types of card are not supported: ZV card, SRAM card, FLASH ROM card (excluding ATA interface type), and other cards that require 12V of operating voltage.

Reinstalling the Original Operating System

[+] How do I reinstall my operating system?
To reinstall your operating system, you must have a CD drive in your multimedia pocket [Note: CF-73S/T/U (Mk4) and CF-73X/Y (Mk5) can also boot to an external Panasonic USB CD drive.] When the laptop is first powered on, the Panasonic name appears in white lettering with the phrase 'Press F2 to enter Setup' directly below it.

When this phrase appears on the screen, immediately press F2 on your keyboard. Put the Panasonic recovery CD in your drive and use the arrow keys to move to the Boot tab. Change the order of boot so the CD drive boots first. To do this, highlight the CD drive and press F6 until CD drive is the No.1 listing. Press F10 to save your changes, exit and follow the instructions when your CD starts running.

SD Card

[+] Do I need to install a driver for my SD card?
If you have an SD card reader built into your laptop, Windows XP SP2 will automatically install a driver for it. If you do not have Windows XP SP2, please call 1-800-LAPTOP5 (800-527-8675) for the necessary file and a procedure to install the SD driver.

If you do not have this application installed on your Toughbook, it can be downloaded by visiting the Download Center.

Touchpad/Touchscreen/Digitizer

[+] I installed an external mouse, and my touchpad and/or my touch screen doesn't work properly anymore.       What do I do?

Try reinstalling the touchpad and/or touchscreen driver.
[+] I reinstalled Windows, and now my touchscreen does not work. How do I reinstall my touchscreen?
Find the complete model number on the bottom of your laptop (e.g., CF-73XXXXXXX) and locate the correct driver from the Download Center. Once you've downloaded the correct driver, extract the contents of the file to a new folder.

The CF-73 has two USB ports located on the right side of the laptop.

Video Display Adaptor

[+] How do I toggle the display between the Toughbook laptop LCD and an external monitor / projector?
Pressing FN and F3 at the same time will toggle the Toughbook?s display between the Toughbook?s LCD, the external monitor/projector and both simultaneously.

If the LCD does not display properly or there is a 'Video Controller' showing with an error in the Device Manager, install /re-install the Video Driver. Download the appropriate Video Driver from Panasonic's website by following the link below. Extract the contents of the file, then run the Setup file (accept all default settings). You may need to restart the Toughbook.
