BIOS

[+] How do I get into the BIOS?
For laptops in series CF-M31 and CF-M32, a memory count occurs and the phrase "Press F1 for Setup" appears during the initial power-up sequence of the laptop. When this phrase appears on the screen, immediately press F1 on your keyboard. It might be necessary to press the key more than once.

For laptops in series CF-M33, the Panasonic name appears in white lettering with the phrase "Press F1 to enter Setup" directly below it when the laptop is first powered on. When this phrase appears on the screen, immediately press F1 on your keyboard. It might be necessary to press the key more than once.

Please go to the Setup Utility section of the online Reference Manual for a complete walkthrough of the BIOS Setup Utility. You can find the Reference Manual on your hard drive by clicking on Start, Programs, Panasonic, and Reference Manual. You will also find it at the Download Center.

CD-ROM Drive (CDD)/DVD

[+] Is my CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive bootable?
Many (but not all) USB CD-ROM drives are bootable on the CF-T2. All Panasonic USB CD-ROM drives are bootable. To boot to your bootable CD-ROM/DVD drive, follow the procedure below:

  1. When the Toughbook is first powered on, the Panasonic name appears in white lettering, with the phrase Press F2 to enter Setup' directly below it. When this phrase appears on the screen, immediately press F2 on your keyboard. It may be necessary to press the key more than once.

  2. Using the Right Arrow key on your keyboard, highlight the Boot menu heading.

  3. Use the Up Arrow key or the Down Arrow key to select [CD/DVD Drive].

  4. Then, using the F6 key, move [CD/DVD Drive] up the list to the No. 1 listing.

  5. Press the Esc key once.

  6. Save Values and Exit should be highlighted. Press Enter to choose the Save Values and Exit menu item. Press Enter again to confirm this choice. The Toughbook will automatically reboot.

Hard Disk Drive (HDD)

[+] Can the hard drive (HDD) be replaced?
No. The hard drive in the CF-T2 is not end-user replaceable.

Keyboard

[+] Why is my keyboard producing the wrong characters when I type?
Make sure that Number Lock is not turned on. (You can tell if Number Lock is turned on by looking for the LED indicator light shaped like a padlock with a number 1 in it.) If this light is on, press the NumLk key to turn off Number Lock.
[+] Why does Number Lock turn on automatically every time I restart the Toughbook?
Windows XP sometimes defaults to automatically turning on Number Lock whenever you log into Windows. You will need to edit the registry to fix this.

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Using the Registry Editor is at your own risk.
  1. Click on Start, then Run.
  2. Type "regedit" and click OK.
  3. On the left side of the screen.
    1. Click to expand the Registry Key "HKEY_USERS".
    2. Click to expand the Registry Key "Default".
    3. Click to expand the Registry Key "Control Panel".
    4. Click on the Registry Key "Keyboard".
  4. On the right side of the screen:
    1. Double-click the Value Name "Initial Keyboard Indicators".
    2. If the Value Data is set to anything other than 0 (zero), change it to 0 (zero).
    3. Click OK.
  5. Close the Registry Editor and reboot the computer.

Manuals

[+] Where can I find the operating instructions and/or reference manual?
A hard copy of the operating instructions is included in the box with the Toughbook. The reference manual is available in electronic form and is included in the Panasonic image for the Toughbook. To access the reference manual, click Start > Programs > Panasonic > On-Line Manuals > Reference Manual.
[+] Is there an online version of the operating instructions and/or reference manual?

Model/Serial Number

[+] How can I determine a Toughbook mobile computer's full model number and serial number?
This information is located on a bar-code label on the bottom of the Toughbook.

The full model number starts with CF-T2, followed by several other characters (e.g., CF-T2AWETZBM). The serial number is a string of 10 characters: one number, followed by four letters, followed by five numbers (e.g., 1ABCD12345).

This information can also be found in the BIOS Setup Utility (See BIOS section).
[+] How can I determine a Toughbook mobile computer's series/generation?
There are several generations (or Marks) of the CF-T2 series Toughbook. The specific Mark can be determined by the first few characters of the model number.

Mark 1 -- CF-T2A
Mark 4 -- CF-T2D
Mark 6 -- CF-T2F

Operating Systems/Drivers

[+] How do I install / update drivers if there is no setup program included with the downloaded driver file?
For Windows XP:

  1. Click Start > Run.

  2. Type in devmgmt.msc and click OK to get to the Device Manager.

  3. Right-click on the desired device and click 'Update Driver.'

  4. If asked to connect to the Internet, select 'No, not at this time' and click Next.

  5. Select 'Install from a list or specific location' and click Next.

  6. Select 'Don't search. I will choose the driver to install' and click Next.

  7. If asked for a device type, select the appropriate type and select Next.

  8. (For a modem, select 'modems'; for sound, select 'Sound, video and game controllers'; for hotkey, select 'System devices'; for LAN or WLAN, select 'Network Adapters'; etc.)

  9. Click 'Have Disk' and click 'Browse.'

  10. Browse to the location of the unzipped driver files.

  11. Click 'Open' and click OK, then click Next.

  12. If you get a Microsoft warning, select 'Yes, Continue anyway.'

  13. You may need to restart the computer for the device to work properly.

For Windows 2000:

  1. Click Start > Run.

  2. Type in devmgmt.msc and click OK to get to the Device Manager.

  3. Right-click the desired device and click Properties.

  4. On the Driver Tab, click 'Update Driver' and click Next.

  5. Select 'Display a List of the known drivers' and click Next.

All drivers are available for download by following the link below. All the files on this site are .ZIP files or self-extracting files.After downloading, extract its contents to your hard drive.

After extracting, there are generally two ways to installthe drivers.
  1. Run the setup file.
  2. Perform an Update Driver on a device from the DeviceManager and point to the folder that contains the extracted driver.

PCMCIA/PC Card--Windows 98/2000

[+] What type of PCMCIA cards can I use?
The slot allows you to use one Type I or Type II card. Please note that the following types of card are not supported: ZV card, SRAM card, FLASH ROM card (excluding ATA interface type), and other cards that require 12V of operating voltage.

Reinstalling the Original Operating System

[+] How do I reinstall the operating system using the Panasonic Recovery Disk(s)?
You will need the Panasonic recovery disk(s)that came with your Toughbook and a bootable USB CD Drive. The CD drive willhave to be set as the first boot device in the boot menu. Instructions onsetting the Toughbook to boot from a CD drive are listed below:

  1. When the Toughbook is first powered on, the Panasonicname appears in white lettering, with the phrase 'Press F2 to enter Setup'directly below it. When this phrase appears on the screen, immediately press F2on your keyboard. It may be necessary to press the key more than once.

  2. Using the Right Arrow key on your keyboard, highlight the Boot tab.

  3. Use the Up Arrow key or the Down Arrow key to select [CD/DVD Drive].

  4. Then, using the F6 key, move [CD/DVD Drive] up the listto the No. 1 listing.

  5. Press the Esc key once.

  6. Save Values and Exit should be highlighted. Press Enterto choose the Save Values and Exit menu item.

  7. Press Enter again to confirm this choice. The Toughbookwill automatically reboot.

  8. To run the recovery disk:

  9. After setting the Toughbook to boot from the CD drive (seeabove), reboot the Toughbook with the Panasonic recovery disk in the CD drive.

  10. If prompted to press a key to boot from the CD drive, press a key.

  11. Follow the on-screen prompts to re-image the Hard DiskDrive (HDD) to factory defaults.

Technical Specifications

[+] How can I view my PC information?
Specific system information (CPU, BIOS, RAM, ports, etc.) can be found in the Desktop Management (DMI) Viewer application. To access the DMI Viewer application click Start > Programs > Panasonic > DMI Viewer. If you do not have this application installed on your Toughbook, it can be downloaded at the Download Center.

This depends on the specific model number:

CF-T2A (Mk1) -- On-board 128 or 256MB. Expandable to 512MB maximum.

Try reinstalling the touchpad and/or touchscreen driver.
[+] I reinstalled Windows, and now my touchscreen does not work. How do I reinstall my touchscreen?
Find the complete model number on the bottom of your laptop (e.g., CF-T2XXXXXXX) and locate the correct driver by following the link below. Once you've downloaded the correct driver, extract the contents of the file to a new folder.

CF-T2A (Mk1) -- Run the FTSETUP.EXE Program
CF-T2D (Mk4) -- Run the FTSETUP.EXE Program
CF-T2F (Mk6) -- Update [Human interface device]-[USB Human interface device] in Device Manager

Video Display Adaptor

[+] How do I toggle the display between the Toughbook's LCD and an external monitor/projector?
Pressing FN and F3 at the same time will toggle the Toughbook?s display between the Toughbook's LCD, the external monitor/projector and both simultaneously.

If the LCD does not display properly or there is a 'Video Controller' showing with an error in the Device Manager, install /re-install the Video Driver. Download the appropriate Video Driver from Panasonic's website. Extract the contents of the file, then run the Setup file (accept all default settings). You may need to restart the Toughbook.
