[+] Can the hard drive (HDD) be replaced?
Yes. Please consult with your authorized Panasonic reseller for a compatible HDD.

Hardware Diagnostic

[+] How can I determine if there is a hardware failure on the CF-W7?

Heat Dissipation

[+] The Toughbook keyboard and case are warm to the touch, can this be prevented?
The Panasonic business rugged series is designed with a fanless structure that radiates heat throughout the entire unit. Heat coming from the keyboard or bottom of the unit is not a defect. If you are concerned with the heat, the following suggestions may improve this issue:
  1. Refrain from using the laptop on places where it insulates heat, such as on a rubber sheet or mattress, and use it where the heat radiates well, such as on a steel desk.

  2. The heat cannot be fully radiated when display of the laptop is closed. Panasonic recommends that the laptop be used with the display open.

  3. Is your laptop set to either "High performance" or "Power saver" in "Power plans" of "Power Options"? If yes, please change settings to Panasonic Power Management, with the following procedures:
    1. Click the Power icon in the notice displayed in the lower right of screen.
    2. Click "More power options."
    3. The Power plans window will open. Click Panasonic Power Management.
    4. Click "x" in the upper right to close this page.

  4. When adding expanded memory, please use Panasonic-recommended memory modules. There are some cases in which the laptop will not function properly or incur damage if a module that is not Toughbook-tested is installed. In some cases, the memory cover may deform due to heat from modules not certified as Toughbook-tested.
Note: Panasonic is not responsible for any defect or damage caused by a module that is not Toughbook-tested and -certified. Please confirm the type of memory and the proper procedures for installation with your authorized Panasonic reseller.

  5. Power off the wireless LAN when not in use.

  6. Please note that the Toughbook will heat up if the CPU usage is continuously high. For example, the CPU usage rate may become high when using screensavers such as 3D images or highly animated images. If the PC heats up when the screensaver is displayed, please change screensaver settings to "Windows Logo." To evaluate any processes that are causing high CPU usage rates review the instructions below:
    1. Press "Ctrl" + "Shift" +"Esc" to boot up Windows Task Manager.
    2. Click "Show processes from all users" in Processes tab.
    3. The User Account Control window will open. Click Continue.
    4. Confirm the displayed process information. Clicking the "CPU" at the top of the row twice will sort the items by CPU usage rate. System Idle Process, under Image Name, is the process not using CPU. The larger this process is, the lower the CPU usage rate.
    5. Press Esc key on the keyboard to close Windows Task Manager.
Note: The following are examples processes that cause an increase in CPU usage rate:
    6. Anti-virus software
    7. Process-intense applications such as Microsoft Office

  7. In Performance Options, change the system settings to "Adjust for best performance" for the following procedures. Once this is complete, Windows Aero will become invalid, and the Windows design will change back to former Windows interface (Windows 95/98/Me/2000).
    1. From the Start menu, click Control Panel.
    2. Click System and Maintenance.
    3. Click System.
    4. Click "Advanced system settings." The User Account Control page is displayed. Click Continue.
    5. On the Advanced tab in System Properties, click Settings in Performance.
    6. The Visual Effects tab will open. Choose "Adjust for best performance" and click OK.
    7. Click "OK to close System Properties.
    8. The window will change back to System and Maintenance - System.
    9. Click "x" in the upper right to close this page.

  8. Change the settings of processor power management with the following procedures:
    1. Click the Power icon in the notice displayed in the lower right of a screen.
    2. Click "More power options."
    3. The power plans window will open. Click Panasonic Power Management.
    4. Click "Change plan settings."
    5. Click "Change advanced power settings."
    6. Click + on the left side of "Processor power management."
    7. Click + on the left side of "Maximum processor state."
    8. Change both "On battery" and "Plugged in" to 50%.
    9. Click OK to close Power Options.
    10. The window will change back to Edit Plan Settings window.
    11. Click "x" in the upper right to close this page.

If the excessive heat persists, please contact Panasonic Technical Support at 1-800-LAPTOP5

Keyboard

[+] What do I do if I spill liquid on the keyboard?
The keyboard on this computer incorporates a drain system (a moisture protection mechanism) that minimizes the amount of liquid that reaches the inside of the computer, even if water is spilled on the keyboard.

Any water that comes in contact with the keyboard is drained off through holes in the bottom of the computer, so that virtually no water is left inside the computer. However, this is not a guarantee against damage to the hard disk or other internal parts or against the loss or deletion of data.

Note: Repairs resulting from liquids being spilled on the computer are not covered by the Toughbook three-year, limited standard warranty.

If you spill water or any other liquid on the keyboard, even a small amount, be sure to perform the following steps. Failure to perform these steps may result in damage to the computer. The drain system will not provide complete protection against water entering the computer.
  1. Immediately turn off the computer and remove the AC adaptor.

  2. Wipe any water droplets off of the top of the keyboard using a soft, dry cloth.

  3. Slowly lift up the computer, keeping it level, and wipe any water coming out of the holes on the bottom using a soft, dry cloth. If the computer is tilted during this step, liquid may seep inside the computer, resulting in damage.

  4. Keeping the computer level, move the computer to a dry place. If the computer is placed back on the wet surface, water may seep inside the computer from the bottom.

  5. Insert the tip of a ballpoint pen or other object into the emergency hole on the bottom of the computer and move it in the direction of the arrow to open the disc cover. The computer should be kept level, without tilting, while the disc cover is being opened. Move the computer to the edge of the desk or table to perform this operation.

  6. Check to see whether there is any water inside the CD/DVD drive. If there is water inside, wipe it using a soft, dry cloth.

  7. Remove the battery pack.

  8. Be sure to contact your technical support office to have the computer checked for any malfunctions.

Note: Detailed instructions and diagrams of the process described above are available in the operating instructions available at the Download Center.

[+] Why is my keyboard producing the wrong characters when I type?
Make sure that Number Lock is not turned on. (You can tell if Number Lock is turned on by looking for the LED indicator light shaped like a padlock with a number 1 in it.) If this light is on, press the NumLk key to turn off Number Lock.
[+] Why does Number Lock turn on automatically every time I restart the Toughbook?
Windows XP sometimes defaults to automatically turning on Number Lock whenever you log into Windows. You will need to edit the registry to fix this.

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Using the Registry Editor is at your own risk.
  1. Click on Start, then Run.
  2. Type "regedit" and click OK.
  3. On the left side of the screen.
    1. Click to expand the Registry Key "HKEY_USERS".
    2. Click to expand the Registry Key "Default".
    3. Click to expand the Registry Key "Control Panel".
    4. Click on the Registry Key "Keyboard".
  4. On the right side of the screen:
    1. Double-click the Value Name "Initial Keyboard Indicators".
    2. If the Value Data is set to anything other than 0 (zero), change it to 0 (zero).
    3. Click OK.
  5. Close the Registry Editor and reboot the computer.
