BIOS

[+] How do I get into the BIOS Setup Utility?
Turn on or restart the computer. Press Fn + U (F2) or press Fn + Delete while the Panasonic boot screen is displayed soon after the computer starts the startup procedure.

Please go to the Setup Utility section of the online Reference Manual for a complete walkthrough of the BIOS Setup Utility. You can find the Reference Manual on your hard drive by clicking on Start > Programs > Panasonic > Reference Manual. You will also find it at the Download Center.

CD-ROM Drive - DVD/CDRW

[+] Is the CD/DVD drive bootable?
Yes, the CD/DVD drive is bootable. To boot to your bootable CD/DVD drive, follow the procedure below:

1.  Turn off the computer and connect the CD/DVD drive to the USB port.
2.  Turn on the computer. Press Fn + U (F2) or press Fn + Delete while the Panasonic boot screen
     is displayed.
3.  If the password is requested, enter the Supervisor Password.
4.  Write down all of the contents of the Setup Utility and press Fn and F9.
5.  At the confirmation message, select [Yes] and press Enter.
6.  Press Fn and B (F10).
7.  At the confirmation message. Select Yes and press Enter. The computer will restart.
8.  Press Fn and U (F2) or Fn and Delete while Panasonic boot screen is displayed.
9.  If the password is requested, enter the Supervisor Password.
10. Set the Product Recovery DVD-ROM into the CD/DVD drive.
11. Select the Exit menu, then select your CD/DVD drive in Boot Override.
12. Press Enter

Hard Disk Drive (HDD)

Hardware Diagnostic

[+] How can I determine if there is a hardware failure with my Toughbook CF-U1?
If the hardware installed in this computer is not operating properly, you can use the PC-Diagnostic Utility to determine whether or not there is a problem. If the utility discovers a problem in the hardware, contact Panasonic Technical Support.

Note: Disconnect any peripheral devices (e.g., storage device) before running the diagnostic check.

Warning: During the diagnostic check do not remove the AC adaptor or attach any peripheral devices
  1. Connect the AC adaptor and turn on the wireless switch.
  2. Turn on or restart the computer. Press Fn + U (F2) or press Fn + Delete several times while the Panasonic boot screen is displayed. If the password is requested, enter the Supervisor Password. Caution: If you are using the computer after changing the settings from the status at the time of purchase, we recommend that you make a note of the settings that are changed.
  3. Press Fn key + (F9). At the confirmation messages, select Yes and press Enter.
  4. Press Fn + B (F10). At the confirmation messages, select Yes and press Enter.
  5. Press and hold Ctrl + Fn + K (F7) while the Panasonic boot screen is displayed. The PC- Diagnostic Utility will automatically begin the diagnostic check on all hardware components.
  6. When all the hardware has been checked, confirm the diagnostic check results.
  7. After the diagnostic check is complete, click the "X", or press Ctrl, Alt and Fn + Delete to restart the computer.

Integrated Global Positioning System (GPS)

[+] How can I utilize my integrated GPS?
CF-U1 does not ship with GPS software. You will need to obtain and install third-party GPS software to utilize your GPS. Some GPS softwares are available at Toughbook Download Center.

[+] How can I determine which COM port my GPS is installed on?
Open the Device Manager and scroll down to Ports. Take note of which COM ports are listed. Open HyperTerminal (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Communications) and change Connect Using to one of the COM ports listed in Device Manager. Change Bits Per Second to 4,800 and click OK. If you see information scrolling on the screen, you have found your GPS module's COM port.
[+] How can I identify if my CF-U1 has an integrated GPS?
To identify if your CF-U1 is built with an integrated GPS, follow the instructions listed below to access and review your BIOS for system information.

  1. Turn on or restart the computer
  2. Press Fn + F2 or press Fn + Delete while the Panasonic boot screen is displayed
  3. Using the Right Arrow key on your keyboard, highlight the Advanced menu heading. If you can locate "GPS" under the Serial Port Configuration, your system was built with an integrated GPS.
Note: Integrated GPS is an available option on the Panasonic Toughbook. Please consult with your authorized Panasonic reseller prior to purchase or visit Toughbook Configurator site.

The GPS available on the CF-U1 does not require the installation of any device drivers.

Keyboard

[+] How do I illuminate the keyboard on a CF-U1 with a backlit keyboard?
The backlit keyboard on the CF-U1 is set to on by default from the factory. To turn the backlight on and off the key combination is Fn + Z.

Please note the keyboard icon printed under the Z key.

Manuals

[+] Where can I find the operating instructions and/or reference manual for my Toughbook?
A hard copy of the operating instructions is included in the box with the Toughbook. The Reference Manual is available in electronic form and is included in the Panasonic image for the Toughbook. To access the reference manual click Start > Programs > Panasonic > On-Line Manuals > Reference Manual.

Yes. You will find both the Operating Instructions and Reference Manual at the Download Center.

Model/Serial Number

[+] How can I determine a Toughbook mobile computer's full model number and serial number?
This information is located on a bar-coded label on the bottom of the Toughbook. The full model number starts with CF-U1, followed by several other characters (e.g., CF-U1A1BUAAM). The serial number is a string of 10 characters: one number, followed by four letters, followed by 5 numbers (e.g., 1ABCD12345).

This information can also be found in the BIOS Setup Utility (See BIOS Section).
[+] What is the generation (Mark) of my Toughbook?
There is currently one generation (or Marks) of the CF-U1 series Toughbook. The specific Mark can be determined by the first few characters of the model number.

Mark 1 - CF-U1A

Operating Systems/Drivers

[+] How do I install / update drivers if there is no setup program included with the downloaded driver file?
  1. Click Start > Run
  2. Type in devmgmt.msc and click OK to get to the Device Manager
  3. Right-click on the desired device and click Update Driver
  4. If asked to connect to the Internet, select "No, not at this time" and click Next
  5. Select "Install from a list or specific location" and click Next
  6. Select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install" and click Next
  7. If asked for a device type, select the appropriate type and select Next.
    Note: For a modem, select "modems";
    for sound, select "Sound, video and game controllers";
    for hotkey, select "System devices";
    for LAN or WLAN, select "Network Adapters"; etc.
  8. Click "Have Disk" then click Browse
  9. Browse to the location of the un-zipped driver files
  10. Click Open, then click OK then click Next
  11. If you get a Microsoft warning, select "Yes, Continue anyway"
  12. You may need to restart the computer for the device to work properly
[+] What operating systems can I install on my Toughbook?
The CF-U1 models support Windows XP Professional SP2 and Windows Vista. Drivers are available for download at the Download Center.

[+] How do I install / update drivers on Toughbook CF-U1?
All drivers are available for download from the Toughbook Download Center. All the files on this site are self-extracting. After downloading, run the file to extract its contents to your hard drive.

After extracting, there are generally two ways to install the drivers.
  1. Run the setup file.
  2. Perform an Update Driver on a device in the Device Manager and point to the folder that contains the extracted driver.

No. Additional memory cannot be added to the CF-U1. Please consult with an authorized Panasonic Reseller for available memory configurations.

Reinstalling the Original Operating System

[+] How do I reinstall the operating system using the Panasonic recovery disk(s)?
You will need the Panasonic recovery disk(s) that came with your Toughbook. The CD drive will have to be set as the first boot device in the boot menu.

Setting the Toughbook to boot from a CD drive:

  1. Turn off the computer and connect the CD/DVD drive to the USB port.
  2. Turn on the computer, and press Fn + U (F2) or press Fn + Del while the Panasonic boot screen is displayed.
  3. If the password is requested, enter the Supervisor Password.
  4. Write down all of the contents of the Setup Utility and press Fn and (F9).
  5. At the confirmation message, select Yes and press Enter.
  6. Press Fn and B (F10).
  7. At the confirmation message select Yes and press Enter. The computer will restart.
  8. Press Fn and U (F2) or Fn and Delete while Panasonic boot screen is displayed.
  9. If the password is requested, enter the Supervisor Password.
  10. Set the Product Recovery DVD-ROM into the CD/DVD drive.
  11. Select the Exit menu, and then select your CD/DVD drive in Boot Override.
  12. Press Enter.

To run the recovery disk:

  1. Click Reinstall Windows and click Next. The License Agreement will appear.
  2. Select "Yes, I agree to the provisions above and wish to continue!" and click Next.
  3. Select the settings and click Next.
  4. Select "Reinstall Windows to the whole Hard Disk to factory default." You will have a single partition.
  5. Select "Reinstall Windows to the operating system partition." You can keep the partition structure.
  6. At the confirmation message, click Yes.
  7. Reinstallation starts automatically. It will take approximately 30 minutes.
  8. Remove the Product Recovery DVD-ROM, and then click OK to turn off the computer.
  9. Remove the CD/DVD drive.
  10. Perform the first-time operation configuration as outline in the Operations Manual.

Touchpad/Touchscreen/Digitizer

[+] How do I utilize the right click functionality with the Touchscreen?
Look to the system tray for the mouse icon, by default the icon will display that the left click is enabled along with the letter L. Simply tap the mouse icon once with the stylus to change to right click. The mouse icon will now display that the right click is enabled along with the letter R. After clicking the desired object as a right click, the mouse automatically returns to left click functionality.
[+] My cursor appears at a different location on the screen when I touch the stylus to the screen. How do I calibrate my Touchscreen?
  1. Click Start then Control Panel then select Other Control Panel Options
  2. Click Touch Panel
  3. Select Calibration in Touch Panel Settings
  4. Select 9 point, 12 point or 20 point in Accuracy required
  5. Click Apply
  6. Click Calibrate Now in Calibration
  7. Using the stylus, touch each of the "+" target marks one by one until it blinks, and then press Enter
  8. Click Update in Calibration
  9. Click OK
[+] How do I clean my Touchscreen?
When the touchscreen becomes dirty, wipe it with a soft cloth. The touchscreen is specially treated to prevent dirt from adhering to the surface, so dirt can be removed easily using a dry cloth. If the dirt does not come off easily, breathe on the surface and try again.

Note: Cleaning the screen while the power is on may cause the computer to malfunction. Also, dirt on the touchscreen is easier to see when the computer is powered off, and so is easier to clean.

Caution: Do not use benzene or thinner, or rubbing alcohol. Doing so may adversely affect the surface, e.g., discoloration. In addition, do not use commercially available household cleaners as they may contain components harmful to the surface.

Universal Serial Bus (USB)

[+] How many USB ports are on theToughbook CF-U1?
Toughbook CF-U1A has one USB port behind a protective port door on the top of the unit.

Video/LCD/Touchscreen

[+] How do I utilize the zoom functionality on the CF-U1?
  1. With the stylus, move the cursor to the position or item you want to zoom in on.
  2. Press the zoom button located on the left side of the CF-U1 display.
    Pressing the plus (+) button will zoom in; pressing the minus button (-)
    will zoom out to the original size.
[+] How do I toggle the display between the Toughbook LCD and an external monitor/projector?
Pressing Fn + E or the Fn + 4 at the same time will toggle the Toughbook display between the LCD, the external monitor/projector, and both simultaneously.

[+] How do I move the zoom position?
Press and hold the stylus near the screen frame in the desired location.
[+] How do I zoom out to the original size?
There are two ways to return the display to the original size. Press the minus zoom button (-) located on the left side of the CF-U1 display or click the zoom icon located in the system tray notification area to display the zoom menu and click [100% Zoom].

Please note that the zoom ration automatically returns to 100% under the following conditions:

When the log in user is changed
When the computer resumes from Standby/Hibernation
In the log off condition
When you press Ctrl + Alt + Delete
