Food Safety Inspection Solution (FSIS)

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Safety Inspection laboratories have a big job, monitoring food production processes nationwide—identifying, evaluating and responding to potential food-borne hazards or threats to the food supply. USDA food inspectors visit meat packing plants, canneries, and other food processing facilities testing for moisture, protein, fat and sodium content, as well as certain classes of chemical residues. Inspectors also investigate outbreaks caused by salmonella and escherichia coli (E. coli). Inspections using mobile computers can take place in freezing cold meat warehouses or hot commercial kitchens in all regions of the country. With inspectors traveling and working in such challenging environments, the USDA needs mobile computers that can withstand the constant exposure to temperature changes, moisture, chemicals and biological contaminants without failing.

Panasonic Toughbook mobile computers are engineered to handle the drops, bumps and spills they face during plant inspections. Toughbook computers have magnesium alloy cases, shock-mounted hard drives, and water-tight ports to protect against dirt, grease and fluids. Further, the spill-resistant keyboards can be easily sanitized if exposed to bacterial contaminants.

Some models also include touchscreens which improve data entry speed and accuracy as well as software navigation. Wireless connectivity allows inspectors to quickly and accurately transfer data to the USDA's central database—saving time when a warning, recall or other urgent action is required. These benefits combine to streamline the inspection and investigation process, boosting productivity and reducing costs.
