Fire / EMS Case Studies

When it comes to emergencies, time is of the essence. First responders need to transmit and receive vital information quickly and reliably. See real life examples of how Panasonic Toughbook® laptops help Fire/EMS crews save lives and protect property.

Albuquerque Ambulance Service

When Albuquerque Ambulance Service realized that a high number of its medical insurance claims were being rejected, it turned to Panasonic for a solution. Using Toughbook 18 units, with their laptop-to-tablet configuration, crews were able to quickly and accurately capture patient data while in the field and send end-of-shift files to the service's main computer while en route back to the station. This eliminated the laborious process of manually transferring handwritten patient files into the database, resulting in 20% fewer rejections, as well as a reduction in the service's overtime costs.

Charleston County Medical Services Department, Charleston County, South Carolina

After conducting a three-year study to identify a mobile computer that meets the demands of its emergency medical staff, the Charleston County Medical Services Department selected rugged and reliable Panasonic Toughbook mobile computers. According to Don Lundy, Director of Charleston County EMS, "There is no comparison between the Panasonic Toughbook and any other commercial product. The idea that you're going to take a laptop into an emergency vehicle, drive it around rough roads, drop it out of a door, get it wet, and do that with a commercial product is absurd, because it would not make it." Lt. Todd McGeorge, Senior Crew Chief, agreed, "Because the Toughbook is such a durable and tough machine, we don't have to worry about the computer. We can focus on patient care."

Chula Vista Fire Department, Chula Vista, California

When the Chula Vista Fire Department decided to deploy a wireless communication system that would link fire trucks to the communication center, it chose Panasonic Toughbook laptops. Toughbook mobile computers, with integrated mobile broadband, enabled crews to access updated maps, information on burning buildings, its fire prevention equipment and hydrant locations. The Toughbook mobile computers also provided firefighters with a fast way to know what other fire or paramedic units were responding to calls. Chula Vista Fire Department Captain David Albright was pleased that his department chose Toughbook mobile computers and stated that, "If we can cut minutes off our response times and get to the situations or incidents in a safer, faster manner and the correct location immediately, we are obviously going to be more helpful to the people."

Dallas Fire Department, Dallas, Texas

With a large community relying on it, the Dallas Fire Department decided to improve efficiency and response times by switching from a paper-based system to an electronic one. With Panasonic Toughbook mobile computers, Dallas paramedics could instantly and accurately access and input data while at the scene of a fire or accident. The new technology enabled paramedics to transmit patient information to the emergency room while en route. This allowed hospital personnel to prepare for the patient, resulting in better patient care.

Dallas EMT Fire Dept, Dallas, Texas

The Dallas EMT Fire/Rescue team consists of 530 paramedics who answer more than 100,000 emergency calls per year. In a situation where saving time means saving lives, paramedics found themselves slowed down by having to fill out patient information forms in the ambulance and then entering the information into a computer back at the station. To overcome this challenge, the department installed an electronic patient care reporting system and deployed Panasonic Toughbook mobile computers to its Fire/Rescue team. This solution put a spectrum of medical data at the EMTs' fingertips, as well as accelerated the exchange of vital patient information, enabling paramedics to focus on the patient, not the paperwork.

Federal Way Fire Department, Federal Way, Washington

The Federal Way Fire Department cut dispatch times from 75 seconds to less than 45 seconds by installing wireless, rugged Panasonic Toughbook mobile computers with two-way radio modems in all of the department's fire trucks. The department plans to extend its mobile computing solutions to provide firefighters with access to mission-critical information such as building profiles and schematics in real-time, which could help quickly locate hazardous chemicals and the shut-offs to power and gas lines.

Montgomery County Hospital District, Texas

Montgomery County Hospital District (MCHD), located outside of Houston, provides EMS and pre-hospital care services to a growing population of approximately 325,000 residents. To keep pace with the population growth, the organization realized that it needed an overhaul of its time-consuming, paper-based processes, which resulted in missing/inaccurate information and billing delays that compromised patient care and regulatory compliance. Using a staged approach, MCHD implemented ZOLL Data System's RescueNet suite of integrated data management products for EMS and armed their 150 field employees with rugged Panasonic Toughbook 28 laptops and in-vehicle mobile data communications devices. This solution improved clinical documentation, accuracy and efficiency of service, and enabled regulatory compliance.
