Located in northern Tanzania, Mount Kilimanjaro stands at 19,341 feet, and is known for its extreme conditions and climates. Read the day-by-day account of the author's harrowing trek, and how the Panasonic Toughbook 19 became his reliable companion.
CVC PRODUCTIONS, a video production company in Windermere, Florida, was preparing to embark on an expedition into the vast, mountainous regions of Kashmir between China and Pakistan in June, 2006.
CVC Productions called Panasonic's headquarters in Secaucus, New Jersey, wanting to know about alternative ways of recharging their Toughbook 18 battery. Because of the high altitude and dangerous terrain, the CVC Productions team had to pack light and could not carry a conventional charger. They explained that once they began scaling the steep, isolated range, they would be days away from any support and would have no way of recharging or replacing the battery.
The engineering team at Panasonic Toughbook worked with CVC PRODUCTIONS to set up a lightweight, easily transportable solar panel that would charge the main battery quickly and efficiently, allowing the expedition to stay on their carefully planned schedule.
