Toughpad G1: BA Cityflyer Deploys Panasonic Rugged Toughpad Tablets

A subsidiary of British Airways that was founded in 2007, BA CityFlyer is known for its superior customer service for passengers commuting to and from London. As the largest operator at London City Airport, their fleet of 14 aircraft carries 1.2 million passengers a year to the likes of France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and throughout the UK.

On each of the airline's aircraft today, engineers and flight crews use Panasonic Toughpad FZ-G1 tablets as an Electronic Technical Log to gather flight and maintenance information and to provide real-time airline maintenance status of the aircraft to the British Airways maintenance system. This eliminates the need for manual data input, speeding up the availability of information to the airline's maintenance control and providing real-time visibility of the aircraft's technical status to crew and engineers.

BA CityFlyer upgraded to the Toughpad FZ-G1 with the latest ETL application from Nvable in 2013 after four years of using Toughbook 19 convertible tablet PCs. The airline made the switch to the Toughpad looking for a mobile computer that was lighter, but still reliable and rugged enough to handle the challenging airline maintenance environment, which can be rife with the potential for damage due to drops, leaks, grease and particulates. In the four years that BA CityFlyer has deployed their Toughbook devices, they have yet to return a device for repair, according to Kevin Tristram, general manager, UK & Ireland Toughbook Group.
