Today, Panasonic has more than 300 ENERGY STAR-qualifying models

across 14 diverse product categories. Many of our models are among the most efficient available in the world. In fact, we offer 12 different TV models that consume less than 0.25 watts in standby power mode including nearly all of our renowned Viera line plasma display TVs. The industry-wide  average for standby mode is closer to 3 watts with some models consuming as much as 10-15 watts.  Panasonic models also typically are more efficient than our competitors’ models.  For example, only 20% of all brands of flat panel display TVs sold in 2005 were ENERGY STAR qualified.  But nearly all Panasonic flat panel display TVs earned the ENERGY STAR rating.

In addition to TVs, nearly all Panasonic cordless telephones and home audio products qualify for ENERGY STAR, as well as most home office equipment models. According to the U.S. EPA, about 40% of all electricity used to power electronics in the home is consumed while the products are turned off or in “standby mode.”  Across the U.S., this equals the annual output of 17 power plants.  Yet standby mode is essential to keep memory settings, activate remote control devices, and provide other maintenance functions.  This is why keeping the standby power consumption low without eliminating product functionality is so important to Panasonic engineers.
   
In recent years, greater attention has been focused on standby power consumption as an indicator of the energy conservation performance of electrics products. The standby power consumption takes place at the power unit of an appliance, typically an AC adapter. The power unit supplies the main unit with the electricity it needs. An electrical current continues to pass through the power device even in standby mode, when the main unit is not in operation. This is why the AC adapter becomes warm to the touch.

Panasonic has targeted energy savings through the use of advanced designed circuitry known as 3-Terminal Intelligent Power Devices (IPDs). Use of the IPDs for our power supplies results in the reduction of about 81 percent compared with conventional models. The IPDs also represent a resource and space efficient chip configuration.

Panasonic's use of IPDs and other efficient power supplies helps propel our products to leadership in the industry. In fact, Panasonic's lineup of highly energy efficient audio and video products surpasses our competitors in meeting the ENERGY STAR criteria.

Panasonic also recognizes that energy savings need to be achieved while the products are being operated.  It should be recognized that CO2 emissions from electronics products in use are 11 times higher than the energy needed in their manufacture.  Accordingly, Panasonic is committed to developing products that operate at the top levels of the industry’s environmental efficiency.  Since 1991, Panasonic has rigorously assessed the environmental impact of our new products including their energy use.  This assessment has fostered our setting target levels for greenhouse gas energy efficiency of our products.   We continually raise the target levels in order to spur design and development of highly efficient products. 

For you the consumer, our efforts produce several benefits. Consumers benefit through energy savings and lower utility bills. In turn, all of us benefit from a cleaner environment aided by reduced greenhouse gas emissions that are created by burning fossil fuels at power plants.
