Smart card readers communicate with an integrated circuit (IC) chip embedded in the plastic card. The smart card connects to a reader with direct physical contact or with a remote contactless RF interface. Given their ability to store large amounts of data and support functions such as encryption, digital signatures and biometric identification, smart cards add intelligence and security in communication with the reader.
