Panasonic Factory Solutions Co., Ltd. a business unit of Panasonic Corporation has started shipping out its lineup of radial component insertion machines equipped with new features. These include, wider range of insertion components, application on a longer PCB and also multi-angle insertion capability. With these, the machines eliminate part of the manual insertion process of components (or insertion using specialized machine), realizing stable insertion quality. Productivity is improved through process integration and labor cost is significantly reduced. Through these efforts, Panasonic Factory Solutions Co., Ltd. offers high quality and high productivity solutions to customers, reducing Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)*1

Features

1. Wider range of insertion component
  • Capable of inserting four types of component lead pitches 2.5mm/5mm/7.5mm/10mm (First in the industry).
2. Application on a longer PCB
  • Capable of transferring PCBs up to the maximum size of 650mm(W) x 381mm(D).
    Maximum insertion area of 650mm(W) x 371mm(D) with full range camera recognition of the insertion holes.*2

3. Multi-angle insertion (only RL131)
  • In addition to the conventional four directions of insertion (0°, 90°, 180°, 270°), it is capable of inserting components at any angle (0 - 359°) with 1° increment, and full range camera recognition of the insertion holes.*2

Background of the development

Insertion components such as capacitors and resistors are still widely used in power supply circuits of PCBs for flat panel TVs, home appliances (white goods) and power supply units.
Moreover, there are needs for replacement of old machines, energy saving through reduction of power and air consumption, and material cost reduction of components and PCBs. Thus the demand for the automatic component insertion machine will remain firm in the future. To achieve further productivity improvement and TCO reduction, the market demands for the automated insertion of the following:
  1. Large-size components which are currently manually inserted (or inserted using a specialized machine),
  2. Components in non standard direction (0°, 90°, -90°, 180°),
  3. Longer PCBs (used in large size flat panel TV) which are not possible on a normal machine.

Features

  1. Wider range of insertion component
    • One radial machine can insert components of four different lead pitches, 2.5mm/5.0mm/ 7.5mm/10.0mm. Currently, 7.5mm and 10.0mm pitch components are manually inserted (or inserted by specialized machines). The range expansion shortens the process, reduces labor cost and improves overall productivity
  2. Application for longer PCB
    • It is now possible to transfer PCBs up to maximum size of 650mm (W) x 381mm (D) from the normal 508mm (W) x 381mm (D). The maximum insertion area is 650mm (W) x 371mm (D) with full range camera recognition of the insertion holes. Productivity is improved. *2
  3. Multi-angle insertion
    • For compact fluorescent lamp (CFL), LEDs and other lighting products, components are often inserted manually, because of space constraint on the PCB causing components to be designed for insertion at an angle.
    • In addition to the conventional four directions of insertion (0°, 90°, 180° and 270°), this new feature enables the machine to insert component at any angle (0 - 359°) with 1° increment, and full range camera recognition of the insertion holes.
    • This greatly improves the productivity and reduces the labor cost through automation.
    • With this extra degree-of-freedom, PCB designing becomes easier, and material cost can be reduced by minimizing the PCB size.
