A cathedral surrounded by light from each era

As you step foot inside the St. Vitus Cathedral, which is a symbol of Prague Castle, make sure to feel the different light pouring down from above. This church was built in the 14th Century, and each time an extension or reconstruction was conducted throughout history, the glass also changed. In this one sublime space, a wide range of glass, differing in period, method of production and materials has been used, each differing in their level of refraction and permeability, together emitting a light filled with expression. I believe a cathedral such as this is quite rare. I also believe that the height of the lighting fixtures is designed to perfection, enabling people to feel the beauty of the light when they look up at the stained glass windows.

Appreciating the stained glass

The most popular feature for visitors to the cathedral is the Alfons Mucha stained glass. Engraved at the bottom are the characters for the Bank of Slavia which provided financial support. Also, the stained glass of the Last Judgment at the top of the golden gate was supervised by Professor Max Svabinsky of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. It is an amazing piece of work which utilizes a sense of perspective; making it feel as if the red color is close, and the blue is distant. The stained glass has many different motifs created by a wide range of artists. As you stand there gazing at it you are sure to lose all track of time.

Traditional or modern?

With regard to the fine arts, there are two groups in Prague. One group says that we must respect tradition, and the other group believes we must fuse tradition with new ideas. The cityscape of Prague has been built through a mixture of these two ideas. A symbol of this can be found between the old 14th Century chapel and the statue of Saint Wenceslaus in St. Vitus Cathedral. Precious stones are embedded in every part of the rooms leading to the crown vault, while the windows have been fitted with abstract designed glass that was created by a 20th Century modern glass craftsman. An elegant chandelier that connects two different kinds of beauty. Very few people would realize that the light for the chandelier comes from LEDs made by Panasonic. The warm clear light that is dearly loved by the people of Prague has been reproduced using state of the art technology. Panasonic's LEDs provide a light that can support both the traditional and the modern groups.
