Nihonto. Katana. The famed sword of the samurai and an example of Japan’s
unique forging methods.
When a Japanese swordsmith creates a masterpiece, the blade is so strong
it can cut straight through a fairly thick steel plate.
The origins of the katana are shrouded in mystery.
What we do know is that steel swords appeared in Japan as early as the
5th century. Trial and error and abundant warfare taught warriors and
swordsmiths what worked—and what didn’t. Over time, workshops and
artisans famous for their fine swords became established in every region
of Japan. The techniques they discovered for crafting the finest blades
live on today…
