25 Years of Innovation by LUMIX
LUMIX’s history of innovation is a journey of bringing cameras closer to everyday life and making beautiful photography more accessible. It is a story of spreading the joy of taking pictures around the world and placing limitless creative possibilities into the hands of everyone.
The Birth of LUMIX
With two digital still cameras, the fall of 2001 sees the launch of a system that for many photographers has long been synonymous with innovative and reliable cutting-edge technology: LUMIX.
The DMC-LC5 and DMC-F7 are the first two Panasonic cameras to carry the new LUMIX brand name. What‘s special about both: They work with the optical technology of Leica Camera AG, a company with a long tradition in optical instruments.
Just a few months earlier, Leica Camera AG, renowned for its world-class optical technology, and Panasonic, with decades of expertise in digital innovation, joined forces through a cooperation agreement, marking the beginning of the LUMIX brand.
The name LUMIX stands for the smart and sustainable combination of optical and digital imaging technology: LUMI (= luminance) and MIX (= mixture).

Pioneering the Mirrorless Camera
It is hard to imagine the world of photography without the principle of the Digital Single Lens Mirrorless (DSLM) camera. Panasonic was a pioneer here with the LUMIX DMC-G1, the world's first DSLM camera which was unveiled at photokina in Cologne in September 2008.
By doing without the mirror box, the new system allowed much more compact and lighter bodies and lenses than classic DSLR cameras, combined with optimum image quality and input from other manufacturers.
After all, the DMC-G1 marked the launch of the Micro Four Thirds System standard which Panasonic developed together with Olympus Imaging Corporation. The open Micro Four Thirds System standard offers users maximum freedom when choosing their equipment.
As a result, the LUMIX G system offered unbeatable advantages after it was launched and the Micro Four Thirds System standard went on to become one of the most successful and biggest camera systems available on the market.
In addition to the system‘s compact design and the new opportunities when it comes to the construction of interchangeable lenses, the LUMIX DSLM models allowed full-time live view image viewing in real time from the very beginning. With their mirrorless structure, they even opened up completely new possibilities.

A New Chapter in Full-Frame
For two decades, LUMIX users have appreciated the fact that systems developed in partnership such as the Micro Four Thirds System speed up the technical development of a system for the benefit of users and result in a wide range of products for every purpose and pocket. Panasonic has plans to work with other high-tech players in the future too.
In 2018, the company entered into another partnership with great potential: together with Leica Camera AG and Sigma, the L-Mount Alliance was launched. The aim is to work together to develop and produce mirrorless camera systems. The L-Bayonet developed by Leica Camera AG is at the heart of the project.
It allows numerous lenses and cameras from the three partners to be combined and thus signals the start of a new era of creative freedom.
