Sacred Island of Okinoshima and Associated Sites in the Munakata Region

The island of Okinoshima is an exceptional example of the tradition of worship on a sacred island. Located 60 km off the western coast of Kyushu island, Okinoshima boasts virtually intact archaeological sites that provide a priceless record of rituals performed from the 4th to the 9th centuries AD. Votive objects used in the rituals at different sites on the island are of exquisite workmanship. Many had been brought from overseas, and provide fascinating evidence of the historic exchanges between the Japanese archipelago, the Korean Peninsula and the Asian continent.
