Historic Centre of Oporto, Luiz I Bridge and Monastery of Serra do Pilar

Portugal

Built along the hillsides overlooking the mouth of the Douro river, the city of Oporto is an outstanding urban landscape with a 2,000-year history. Named Portus by the Romans, the city's links to the sea have fuelled its continuous growth over the millennia. From the cathedral with its Romanesque choir to the neoclassical Stock Exchange and the typically Portuguese Manueline-style Church of Santa Clara, the many monuments and rich architecture eloquently express cultural values from the Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque to the neoclassical and modern periods. The vibrancy of the town continues to ensure its survival as a living historic centre.
