Historic Quarter of the Seaport City of Valparaíso

Chile

Until the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914, Valparaíso was the first and most important merchant port on the Pacific coast of South America. Afterwards development slowed allowing the city to largely retain the key features of its industrial-age heyday in the late 19th and early 20th centuries including its urban elements, its architecture, its port heritage such as Prat Pier and even its funicular elevator and trolley transportation systems typical of the period. The topography of the bay, the narrow coastal plains and the ravine-scored steep hills together created the city's scenic amphitheatre-like layout.
