Panasonic develops "Full Bright PP," an optical reflective polypropylene resin molding compound

Osaka, Japan - Automotive & Industrial Systems Company, Panasonic Corporation has developed a polypropylene resin molding compound [1] "Full Bright*1 PP" for plastic sheet and film used as reflective plate in LED lighting installed under harsh conditions such as outdoor signage, shop lighting and plant factories. Due to its outstanding durability (UV resistance, heat resistance / humidity resistance, chemical resistance [2]), it is able to maintain high optical reflectance during long-term exposure to high temperatures and UV. Samples will be available from June 2014.

Application of LED lighting has expanded beyond residential homes to include outdoor lighting for signage and shops, and lighting for plant factories. For LED lighting, a reflective plate is usually attached close to the light source in order to increase light efficiency. Currently this reflective plate is made from either metal or PET resin, but with the increasing diversification of environments where LED lighting is being installed, there has been a growing demand for lighter materials with greater durability (UV resistance, heat resistance / humidity resistance, chemical resistance). 
Our newly developed molding compound possesses a high optical reflectance and outstanding durability and is perfectly suited to the forming of sheets and films, contributing to higher luminance and longevity of LED lighting for use in shops, plant factories and interior lighting in automobiles.

1. Maintains high optical reflectance under high temperature/ UV conditions, contributing to greater longevity of light source Greater than 94% optical reflectance after 2000 hours under 120‹C UV conditions (PET resin: 80% or less*2)

Explanation of terminology

[1]Thermoplastic molding compound

A plastic molding compound that is rigid at normal temperatures but becomes pliable and easy to mold when heat is applied, and then regains its rigidity once more upon cooling.

[2]Chemical resistance

Refers to property of resistance to physical change or change of appearance when exposed to chemicals.
