Environmental Support for the Entire Factory

Panasonic launched its Factory Energy Conservation Support Service in April 2010, based on its success in reducing CO2 emissions in production activities in the three years of fiscal 2008-2010. This service provides all-round support in energy-saving activities at factories, from visualization of energy use and energy conservation diagnoses to execution of concrete energy-saving measures, comprehensively covering the aspects of technology, equipment, human resources, and finance.

As part of this service, we developed SE-Navi, a condensed system containing our energy management expertise and know-how to visualize energy consumption at factories. This system identifies the level of energy consumption efficiency with basic energies such as electricity and gas, physical data such as flow, pressure, temperature, and humidity that directly reflects the operation status, and production quantity to help factories swiftly plan energy-saving measures, make trial calculations, and improve verification accuracy. This system also provides graphic displays of long-term efficiency fluctuations for equipment, including compressors, boilers, and freezers, to identify equipment deterioration and necessary maintenance—all of which serve to reduce wasted energy consumption. The SE-Navi has an energy-saving navigation function that identifies issues in the production line and equipment in a timely manner by analyzing the basic unit calculated from the production volume and energy consumption level based on our unique energy-saving determination method. The function automatically identifies sources of energy loss and quantifies the scale of loss, which helps identify the points that must be improved for more efficient energy usage.

During the period of six years from 2010 to 2016, energy-conservation support was provided through diagnoses of approx. 450 cases in the automotive, food, pharmaceutical, machinery, and electronic components industries in Japan. It is also registered as a diagnostic service dedicated to corporate energy conservation diagnosis under the Ministry of the Environment's program for assessing CO2 reduction potential and providing information on the use of effective facilities, operational improvements, etc.
By creating a packaged service of technologies, knowledge, and experience related to the environment cultivated within our Group in the form of Total Environmental Package Solutions for Entire Factories and offering a total solution that covers not only energy conservation but also environmental and energy technologies in wastewater treatment and water recycling, exhaust treatment, resources recycling, soil and groundwater purification, and photovoltaic power generation, we will further contribute to the comprehensive environmental actions being undertaken by enterprises outside Panasonic.

Energy-saving support for Torii Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.

Panasonic has been providing support for energy-saving activities of Torii Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. since 2013. With our diagnosis of their Sakura Plant in January 2013, the inverter pumps we proposed were installed in August 2013. In addition to energy-saving support, in April 2014 we provided support for stable operations through our lifecycle support business covering proposing, installing, and maintenance of a heat source upgrade for the warehouse building. Based on these achievements, we now provide assistance with the inspection and management of air-conditioning facilities, as well as energy-saving measures made possible only by fine-tuning of the machines and continual maintenance of their energy-saving capabilities. We are also offering energy-saving ideas that keep their facility investment, maintenance, and management costs to a minimum, including inspection and maintenance of facilities to enable the efficiency upkeep and review of capacity when facilities are replaced. As a result of these efforts, CO2 emissions for the entire Sakura Plant for fiscal 2014–2016 decreased by roughly 2.4% compared to fiscal 2011. Since fiscal 2017, proposals have been offered to enable CO2 reductions by another approx. 2%. We will continue offering proposals from fiscal 2017 onwards that will allow further CO2 reductions.
Going forward, we plan to implement not only short-term measures for energy conservation, but also measures that give both energy conservation and compliance with GMP*1 in pharmaceutical product manufacturing, by establishing PDCA as the basis for continuous energy-saving activities, involving regular energy diagnoses and measures.
