Environmental Support for the Entire Factory

Panasonic launched its Factory Energy Conservation Support Service Business in April 2010, by making use of actual results in reducing CO2 emissions in production activities in the three years of fiscal 2008-2010. This service provides all-round support in energy-saving activities at factories, from visualization of energy use and energy efficiency diagnoses to execution of concrete energy efficiency measures, covering the aspects of technology, facility and equipment, human resources, and finance.

As part of this service, we have analyzed data which are managed by respective our customers, and understood the level of energy consumption efficiency with basic energies such as electricity and gas used in respective factories, physical data such as energy flow, pressure, temperature, and humidity that directly reflects the operation status of the facility and equipment. With the analysis results, we have supported the customers in swiftly formulating energy efficiency measures, making trial calculations, and improving accuracy of the verification.

At the beginning when the business started, we worked to clearly understand deterioration of equipment and necessity of its maintenance, through indicating variations of energy efficiency in long term in graphic displays with power equipment such as compressors, boilers, and freezers, and reduced their wasted energy consumption. Then, we accelerated energy efficiency activities, through paying attention to the production volume per basic unit calculated from the production volume and energy consumption, and utilizing the production volume per basic unit to "CO2 ITAKONA method" which timely extracts issues of production lines, and of facilities and equipment.

We are currently working on further developing such activities; concretely developing "Smart EMS" which has a function to timely measure energy efficiency, realizing optimum environment, through connecting the product conditions and respective operational statuses of the power equipment via IoT, and making full use of AI. We are now in the middle of verification testing towards commercialization of the "Smart EMS" in 2020.

In the eight years from fiscal 2011 to 2019, we conducted diagnoses of approx. 550 cases in the automotive-related, food, pharmaceutical, machinery, and electronic components industries in Japan and supported for their energy efficiency, respectively. Moreover, we registered as a diagnostic service body dedicated to corporate energy efficiency diagnosis for 'CO2 reduction potential business' led by the Ministry of the Environment, which provides information on the use of effective facilities and equipment, operational improvements, and the like, in order to reduce CO2 emission. We continue these energy efficiency activities.

By making full use of environmental technologies, know-hows, and experience which have been developed and established in Panasonic group, the service of the Total Environmental Package Solutions for Entire Factory, which provides a total solution that covers not only energy efficiency measures, but also environmental and energy technologies in wastewater treatment and drainage and water recycling, exhaust gas treatment, resources recycling, soil and groundwater purification, and photovoltaic power generation, has been developed. By enhancing the package service, we will further contribute to the comprehensive environmental solutions for Panasonic customers.

Energy Efficiency Support for ALPS COMPANY

Panasonic has supported energy efficiency activities of ALPS COMPANY (former Alps Electric, referred as APLS hereinafter) since 2013. We conducted a simple diagnosis of energy efficiency at its Kakuda factory in Jan. 2014. And then, in order to further investigate the results of the simple diagnosis in details and take a measurement, we conducted a detailed diagnosis of energy efficiency using 'CO2 reduction potential business' led by Ministry of Environment, in Sept. 2014.
As a result, our proposal of the fuel conversion by a heat-source equipment (from Heavy oil A to Electricity) was accepted by ALPS, and Panasonic installed the equipment for ALPS. In the next year, i.e. 2016, we proposed ALPS to renew the aging air conditioner for outside air processing, in connection with the above heat-source equipment. In 2017, ALPS has reduced energy consumption for air compression by introducing a turbo compressor.
On top of it, we not only propose to renew to energy efficiency equipment, but also implement energy efficiency measures through only tuning equipment, without investment with ALPS factory members, As the energy efficiency activities at ALPS Kakuda factory had been highly evaluated, at its Nagaoka factory, we proposed to introduce a Free Cooling Chiller for chilled water production, through a simple diagnosis and roll-out of the 'CO2 reduction potential business' in the same manner as conducted in Kakuda factory. After receiving ALPS's acceptance for our proposal, we installed the chiller which was completed in the end of 2018.
As a result of these activities, in Kakuda factory, approx. 2.2% for the CO2 emission from the whole factory in the period of 2015 to 2018 was reduced versus year 2014, while in Nagaoka factory, reduction of approx. 3% of the CO2 emission is expected. We will continue to support ALPS to further reduce CO2 emission even after 2019.
We plan to support ALPS in implementing measures with not only short-term energy efficiency plan, but also continuous energy efficiency activities by conducting periodical energy efficiency diagnosis and implementing appropriate measures.
