Foam Enhances Surfactant Power
Surfactants are what give detergent the ability to eliminate dirt.
They are present on the surface of detergent particles. When
detergent is turned into foam, the surfactants get dispersed on the
entire spherical surface of each foam bubble.
This increases the overall surface area of surfactants in contact
with dirt, making it easier for the detergent to remove the dirt from
clothing.
Mechanism of dirt removal by foam surfactants
1. Foam bubbles on which
surfactants have accumulated
get close to oil stains on laundry.
2. The components that are
attracted to oil (lipophilic groups)
start to cover oil stains.
3. The outer surface of dirt is
covered by the components that are
attracted to water (hydrophilic
groups), and the dirt is loosened
and removed from clothes.
4. The removed dirt particles are
washed away effectively with water.
