Panasonic Accorded Top Honour Green Technology Award by Singapore Business Federation

Contributing actively to environmental sustainability through energy efficient products, comprehensive solutions and innovative green technology

31st October 2013, Singapore – Panasonic Asia Pacific (Panasonic) has been awarded the Top Honour Green Technology Award in the Large Enterprise Category of the Singapore Sustainability Awards 2013. Organised by the Singapore Business Federation, the Singapore Sustainability Awards recognises organisations in private and public sectors, for their outstanding sustainable business practices, innovative green technology solutions as well as corporate environmental responsibility efforts.

“Panasonic is honoured to be recognised for our efforts in sustainability. This is an area of focus that is crucial for us, as a global manufacturer, to be active in,” said Tatsuyuki Nonaka, Director, Environment and External Affairs Group, Panasonic Asia Pacific on receiving the award. “The Top Honour Green Technology Award affirms Panasonic’s new brand promise of “A Better Life, A Better World”, which the company is committed to achieve. Panasonic is focused on bringing energy efficient appliances towards a better life for its consumers, and energy solutions for environmental and urban sustainability towards a better world. We are committed to be environmentally responsible in all our business activities.”

Green Appliances – For A Better Life

In terms of product development, Panasonic has incorporated energy efficient ECONAVI functionality across its range of home appliances such as refrigerators, air conditioners and washing machines. ECONAVI is a combination of sensor technology and program control software which allows for more energy efficient operations and less environmental impact while at the same time maintaining comfort level. Panasonic has been promoting eco products with energy efficiency, water efficiency and long lasting features as unique selling points in the region. Currently, around 80% of Panasonic sales in the Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa region is contributed by eco products including ECONAVI, LED lighting and rechargeable batteries.

Green Solutions – For A Better World

Leading green innovations, Panasonic promotes energy solutions for residential and commercial buildings which efficiently create, store, save and manage energy.
The Punggol Eco Town test-bed project sees Panasonic energy solutions being integrated in public residential housing. Photovoltaic systems and lithium ion storage batteries were installed to achieve zero energy for common areas, and 10 households were retrofitted with energy efficient ECONAVI air conditioners. Panasonic’s proprietary Home Energy Management System (HEMS) also enabled real time energy visualization and management. Now in its third quarter, the project has seen total household energy consumption reduced by an average of 20%. Working towards a better world, Panasonic aims to replicate such integrated urban solutions to more South East Asia neighbourhoods in future.
In the last two years, Panasonic has successfully established Panasonic Energy Solutions Development Centre and Regional Energy Solutions Business Incubation and Development Group in Singapore to strengthen research, development and implementation of viable green technologies for local and regional markets.

Green Manufacturing Practices

Panasonic also incorporates green technology in its manufacturing operations regionally to minimise environmental impact. The company focuses on resource recycling, chemical substance management, biodiversity conservation and reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. As of March 2013, carbon emissions have been reduced by 638,000 tonnes versus ‘business-as-usual- level1 .

Corporate Social Responsibility Towards Eco Awareness

Beyond that, Panasonic recognises the vital role of environmental education in achieving long term sustainability. 278,000 students in the region have participated in various eco learning programmes organised by Panasonic. Through biodiversity conservation programmes such as tree-planting and clean-up activities, Panasonic aims to effect positive environmental change. In addition, Panasonic continues to strengthen eco awareness and propel sustainability efforts within the community through participation in international exhibitions and conferences.

Past Accolades

In 2012, Panasonic was awarded the President’s Award for the Environment, the highest accolade in Singapore for significant contributions to the country’s sustainability efforts. The Eco Friend Award 2010 also recognised the company’s green commitments.
