If you’ve been thinking about a new television, the chances are you’ve noticed that two main rival technologies are competing for your attention (and your money).

What are the most obvious things to consider when researching a new TV? Well, there is the question of screen-size, of course - too big or too small is no good, your new television has to be just right.
And then, naturally, there’s the price - your perfect new TV doesn’t seem so perfect when you realise it costs twice your budget, does it?

There’s no doubt OLED is the more glamorous technology of the two - this is the case for a couple of reasons:

Because the Organic Light-Emitting Diodes that make up the pixels of the screen produce their own light, there is no need for a backlight to illuminate the pixels - which is why OLED TVs are so extraordinarily slim. LED TVs, on the other hand, are made up of many layers, including LED lights that shine through a Liquid Crystal Display panel. As a consequence, LED TVs don’t quite have the incredible thinness of the OLED alternative.

And because OLED TV pixels are self-illuminating, they can be turned on or off individually. When you consider a 4K TV has well over eight million pixels, being able to give each one specific instructions means incredible picture accuracy and detail - and being able to turn their illumination completely off means beautifully deep perfect black tones. The LED backlighting of an LCD TV panel doesn’t work on a pixel-by-pixel basis, and so it can’t quite achieve the incredible contrast of an OLED.

But this doesn’t mean the game is up for LED TVs. Importantly, they’re available in a wider range of screen sizes than OLEDs (which tend to be on the bigger side), so if you need a screen of less than 50in, say, then you’ve a much wider choice of LED TVs. And, let’s not forget, OLED is a cutting-edge technology - and this sort of stuff never comes cheap. Panasonic’s OLED range is very competitively priced, but there’s no two ways about it: if you want to keep costs down, an LED TV is probably the way to go.
