Japanese people are at times very particular about cleanliness, even to the point of being nervous. Removing hair tangled in the vacuum cleaner was very stressful for such people. And although the problem was not directly related to cleaning performance, this was one of the important issues that Panasonic had to solve in order to make cleaning stress-free.
The commitment to cleanliness was indeed the main driving force behind resolving the problem of hair becoming tangled in the nozzle.
A challenge that many developers have been tackling for 50 years.
Since 50 years ago when vacuum cleaner nozzles started mounting a brush head, hair becoming tangled has always been troubling us. The developers have gone through repeated trial-and-errors in the effort to solve this problem somehow. However, realization of both the mechanism to prevent the tangling and the ideal cleaning function was an immense challenge, and a long period of time has elapsed while the perfect solution went undiscovered.
Our young developer has also failed multiple times.
Horibe, a young developer who had been training in the engineering department, was also one of the many developers faced with this tough challenge. Through experiments, he knew that the hair had a tendency of collecting in the center and the ends of the brush. Using the discovery as a hint, he tried changing the length of the bristles and altering the airflow, but none of the changes was successful in maintaining its original cleaning function, making the development come to a halt.
Three years have elapsed since Horibe started tackling this issue, and the repeated failures often made him feel like he was losing his mind. And it was around that time when some cups on his desk caught his eyes. It crossed his mind that conical cups easily come apart even when layered, and he wondered if there was any way he could apply this idea to the brush head.
The cone-shape moves the hair! The birth of double conical brushes.
Although he had gained the hint of making the brush head cone-shaped, a single cone would not suck in hair even if it was able to collect them. Therefore, Horibe put 2 brushes with the thinner ends facing the center, and saw that the hair was successfully being collected to the center, flowing into the intake port. This is how the double conic brushes were born.
The double conical brushes rotate at high speed, carrying hair from the end with thicker diameter to the thinner end.
The V-shaped configuration allows for the air to flow from the sides to the intake port in the center, collecting hair more easily.
Evolved into a high-performance nozzle that can also remove bacteria*
Aside from the shape of the brushes, various improvements have been made to the Tangle-Free Power Nozzle. The core of the brush and the rollers, which are also prone to getting hair tangled, have also been improved. And what's more, the bristles are more dense and the added ion plate removes even the bacteria on the floors.* It surely will be a helpful addition to families with children and pets.
