Haze : Is Staying Indoors Really Enough?

Haze : Is Staying Indoors Really Enough?

When haze hits, most of us know the drill. We limit outdoor activities, head indoors, and keep the doors and windows closed.

But are these steps really enough?

Haze is made up of fine particles that may be invisible to the naked eye. And just because you’ve shut the haze outside doesn’t mean it can’t find its way in. Sneaky!

Polluted outdoor air can enter through gaps around doors and windows, ventilation pathways, or simply when doors are opened as we come and go.

So, while staying indoors is an important first step, there’s more you can do to take better care of the air inside your home.

Haze Can Find Its Way Indoors

When the Air Quality Index (AQI) climbs, spending less time outdoors helps reduce our exposure to haze. But it’s also worth paying attention to the air where we may be spending most of our time, especially our homes.

After all, our homes aren’t completely airtight. Outdoor air and the pollutants can make their way inside throughout the day.

What’s Really Lurking in the Haze?

Haze is more than something that blurs our view or leaves a smoky smell in the air. It contains various pollutants, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

Research conducted by Panasonic in collaboration with the Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT) highlights PAHs as a particular concern because of their potential impact on human health and the environment.

Professor Ir. Ts. Dr. Sheikh Ahmad Zaki Shaikh Salim, who supervised the study, highlighted that the atmosphere contains various substances during haze events, with PAHs among those of particular health concern.

That said, safeguarding ourselves and our loved ones goes beyond simply keeping the haze outside.

Closing Your Windows is Only the First Step

When haze hits, keep doors and windows closed and seal any obvious gaps where polluted outdoor air may enter.

Monitor the air quality both outside and inside your home.

Additionally, your air conditioner and air purifier filters should be cleaned regularly to keep them working effectively.

But if pollutants have already made their way indoors, what else can you do?

That’s where active air purification can make a difference.

Go Beyond Filtration with nanoe™ X

Conventional filtration relies on drawing air through a filter to capture pollutants. Panasonic nanoe™ X does more.

nanoe™ X generates a large amount of hydroxyl radicals contained in water and releases them throughout the room. Known as “nature’s detergent”, hydroxyl radicals react with pollutants to inhibit airborne and adhered pollutants, while deodorising the space.

A study by Panasonic and MJIIT examined the effectiveness of nanoe™ X against three key PAH compounds commonly found in haze. These PAHs pose serious health and environmental risks, and can persist in the environment and increase in concentration during haze periods.

The research demonstrated that nanoe™ X can inhibit these PAHs.

Haze Can Linger. nanoe™ X Continues to Work for You.

Haze isn’t always over in a few hours, it can continue for a whole month or even longer. That makes continuous indoor air purification all the more important when haze persists.

Did you know?

Panasonic air conditioners with nanoe™ X technology can operate nanoe™ X purification mode independently without the cooling operation. Its low energy consumption (as low as 25 Watts per hour*) also means you can keep nanoe™ X running throughout the day for continuous air purification even while you are away.

*Energy consumption may vary depending on models.

Be Haze-Ready with Panasonic
