The bridge for pros
In 2014, Panasonic expanded its successful bridge camera range with the DMC-FZ1000. It thus opened up the market segment for all-in-one superzoom cameras to semi-professional and professional users too.
The DMC-FZ1000 featured a 1-inch image sensor and was the first LUMIX camera to do so. The 1-inch High Sensitivity MOS sensor had a 20.1-megapixel resolution and offered the perfect balance between convenience and image quality.
The fast LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT 25-400mm/F2.8-4.0 lens impressed experts with its excellent descriptive performance and flexibility, allowing anything from wide-angle to super telephoto shots.
Another highlight of the DMC-FZ1000: the LUMIX superzoom was the world’s first compact camera to record 4K videos.
The world’s first 4K-hybrid
The LUMIX story, which already featured numerous world premieres, reached another high point in 2014: the DMC-GH4, the first hybrid Digital Single Lens Mirrorless (DSLM) camera which can record 4K videos was unveiled.
4K PHOTO, added in the firmware update, allows you to extract high quality photos with approximately 8-megapixel (equivalent to A4 print size) at 30 frames per second from 4K video. This extremely important feature for professional videographers is useful for photographers too.
The DFD (Depth from Defocus) technology which was developed by Panasonic was another brand-new feature which premiered in this top LUMIX model, the DMC-GH4.
This further development of the classic Contrast AF system offered noticeably better performance for photos and videos and is used in LUMIX cameras to this day.
Smartphone style camera
The DMC-CM1 introduced at Photokina 2014 was a smartphone-style camera with Android™ 4.4. Its slim body featured full-fledged camera specifications such as a 1-inch sensor and 28mm F2.8 LEICA DC ELMARIT lens (35mm camera equivalent). Full manual operation was also possible. The DMC-CM1 allowed stress-free photographic expression by enabling the user to record photos and videos in everyday life and to share them with others immediately using the smartphone function.
