What is Alkaline Ionized Water ?

Generally, the pH of tap water is 7 which is neutral, but alkaline ionized water has an alkaline pH, is drinkable and contains hydrogen that is generated when water is electrolysed. Water of pH 8.5 to 9.5 is recommended.

What are Alkaline Ionizers ?

This refers to household electrolysed water generators that electrolyse water to generate alkaline ionized water containing hydrogen (H2) and hydroxide ions (OH-). In Japan, our alkaline ionizers have been certified as "home medical equipment" and they have been recognized for their effectiveness in improving gastrointestinal symptoms.

Alkaline Ionized Water

Ease the feeling of heaviness or discomfort in the stomach and helps gastrointestinal movement for favorable bowel movements

The gastrointestinal symptom improvement effect of alkaline ionized water has been approved under the Japan Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Act (PMD Act). Drinking about 0.5 to 1 L of the water a day can be expected to alleviate gastrointestinal symptoms. It’s recommended to start with water that has a pH of 8.5 until you gradually become used to it.

Extracts more flavour from green tea

More components are extracted from tea leaves in alkaline ionized water, resulting in a different coloured tea from that made with the same amount of leaves. Even with a small amount of tea leaves, you can enjoy a delicious cup of tea.

It efficiently extracts glutamic acid umami (savoury taste) components from food to help make your dishes more flavourful.

1960s–70s | Protecting Water

Many communities still relied on well water—an era when “every household had to consider the safety of their water."

In 1966, Panasonic launched a well water purifier—a device that drew up and purified water directly from wells—marking the starting point of home water purification. Since then, we’ve continued delivering the technology to secure safe water.

1980s | Addressing Concerns over Tap Water

As the tap water supply became more stable, new concerns emerged— particularly trihalomethanes and strong smell or taste.

In 1983, Panasonic launched its first faucet-mounted water purifier in Japan— moving water purification into something that could be done in people’s homes at their kitchen faucets.

1990s | Choosing Water

Water became something that people actively chose with heightened awareness of water quality based on taste, safety, and health concerns.

In 1993, Panasonic introduced an alkaline ionizer to meet rising demand for alkaline ionized water.

Our overseas expansion began in 1997 with Taiwan, chosen for its pressing water quality issues and our established relationship with a local distributor. Building on that brand trust, we then expanded into Malaysia and Vietnam. In regions with a background in traditional Eastern medicine, growing interest in alkaline ionized water also worked in our favor.

The 2000s | Upgrading Performance

As the number of substances water purifiers were able to remove increased, consumers began comparing products based on measurable performance and questioning whether claims of safety and effectiveness could be trusted. At the same time, against the backdrop of droughts, water outages, and the growing habit of keeping bottled water at home, a new idea spread around managing water supply, not just choosing water.

We enhanced cartridge performance and focused on communicating those improvements clearly in Japan. In the late 2000s, we introduced high performance alkaline ionizers and our first pitcher style water purifier, supporting a diverse range of household needs.

The 2010s | Considering Water for Society and Daily Life

Disasters and large-scale water service interruptions, along with rising environmental awareness made securing a stable supply of water for drinking and cooking a realistic concern. Ease of use and long-term usability became reasons for people choosing water purifiers.

We launched horizontal storage pitcher purifiers and cooking water softeners in 2010–2011, offering solutions tailored to how different households use water.

The 2020s | Self-Sufficiency at Home

People around the world began spending more time at home. Awareness of water quality at home—such as issues of PFAS—has grown, and new demand for comprehensive household water management is expanding.

In 2023, cumulative sales of Panasonic Alkaline Ionizer surpassed three million units.

Q: Isn’t it possible to use underground water for the Alkaline Ionizer?

A: Underground water cannot be used. The quality of underground water is unstable, so please use the tap water.

Q: Is it okay to take medicine with alkaline ionized water?

A: Please drink with purified water. Our products can produce alkaline ionized water that is effective in improving the gastrointestinal tract, which is approved by the Pharmaceutical Machinery Law. Therefore, it will be treated as a medicine, and due to contraindications for concomitant use, please avoid drinking with alkaline ionized water when taking the medicine.

Q: Does boiling alkaline ionized water eliminate the effect of alkaline ionized water ?

A: The effects of alkaline ionized water have been recognized for drinking as is. If you want the effect, drink without boiling the ionized water.

Q: I have a chronic disease in my liver and kidneys. Is it okay to drink alkaline ionized water ?

A: Talk to your doctor before drinking alkaline ionized water and tell him/her the following two points.
1. The water contains more of minerals such as calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium than tap water.
2. The water has a pH of about 9.5
