Snapshots capture a moment’s happening or facial expression. People take snapshots when they discover interesting scenes in daily life, impressive landscapes, and unique occurrences. The development target for the LEICA DG SUMMILUX 15mm/F1.7 was to create a high-performance, compact lens that is small enough to carry around at all times and provides the highest possible image quality.

Development intentions

• Compact and lightweight F1.7 large-aperture lens
For this lens, the development aim was to create a wide-angle lens that meets all three important conditions for snapshots and landscape photography, namely a large aperture, high performance and compact size. To satisfy the needs of those who walk around town with a camera in hand and take snapshots at a moment’s notice, Panasonic set the aperture specification to a F1.7 large so that high-quality pictures can be obtained using a compact and lightweight lens. The focal length was set to 30 mm to provide a semi-wide angle that is suitable for snapshots. This specification gives a wider angle of view than a second-standard 35mm lens in 35mm camera equivalent and also a more gentle perspective effect than a 28mm lens. It is also compact and comfortable to hold. The lens barrel is equipped with an AF/MF selector switch and aperture ring that allow quick operation. The high-grade metal housing bespeaks Leica quality. This lens is optimally designed for street photography.

Image rendering performance target and technologies incorporated to achieve the development goal

• Inner focus type lens system with 9 elements in 7 groups
Panasonic achieved the remarkably compact size and light weight of 115 g despite the large-aperture F1.7 by leveraging the mirrorless camera’s short flange back distance and by employing an inner-focus system with 3 lens groups. Moreover, the optical system with 9 elements contains 3 aspherical lenses to correct spherical aberration and image surface curvature, thus ensuring high image rendering even at the frame edges. A noteworthy feature of this lens is that there is no performance degradation over the entire shooting range, from infinity to the shortest shooting distance, notwithstanding its large-aperture and compact size.

• Nano Surface Coating and the supplied metal hood against backlight
Coupled with multicoating Nano Surface Coating and the supplied metal hood, the lens suppresses ghosts and flare that occur due to backlight, improves tonal reproduction and achieves sharp and clear rendering. In addition, the 7-blade circular aperture diaphragm and high-speed, high-precision contrast AF with a 240-fps drive capability deliver outstanding performance.
