New Magic firmware means six Lumix cameras can now shoot BRAW

New Magic firmware means six Lumix cameras can now shoot BRAW

Firmware coming at the end in November brings 12-bit BRAW to GH5s and BGH1

New Magic firmware means six Lumix cameras can now shoot BRAW

The number of Lumix cameras that can record in Blackmagic’s BRAW format will increase to six this November as new firmware brings the capability to two additional cameras. Already users can record in BRAW to a Blackmagic Video Assist 12G from the Lumix S1H, S1 and the Lumix S5 but from November the Lumix GH5S and BGH1 will be added to that list - as well as the newly announced Lumix BS1H full frame box camera.

Firmware v2.2 for the Lumix GH5S and v2.3 for the Lumix BGH1 will become available on 4th November on the Panasonic Lumix support site. Both cameras will be able to output 12-bit RAW footage in 4K 4096x2160 resolution in frame rates of up to 59.94p. In Anamorphic mode a 4:3 3.7K 3680x2760 image will be recorded again with frame rates of up to 59.94p.

BRAW resolution settings for the Lumix GH5S and BGH1

Both of these cameras are already capable of recording ProRes RAW files to the Atomos Ninja V, so the new firmware will be great news for those using BlackMagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve software.

The new full frame Lumix BS1H will also allow BRAW as well as ProRes RAW recording when it goes on sale in the middle of November this year, but will offer resolutions of up to 6K using the whole width of its sensor. C4K and 4K resolutions will also be possible in S35 mode, as will 3.5K 3536x2656-pixel resolution Anamorphic recording.

G9 gets Focus Control too

The new firmware also brings Focus Ring Control to both of the GH5S and the BGH1 models as well as to the Lumix G9. This allows users to determine how the focus ring behaves on certain compatible lenses and the degree it needs to be turned to travel from the closest to the further focus positions. Users will have a choice of Linear and Non-Linear options.

The lenses that will be compatible with this feature are:

  • H-XA025
  • H-ES200
  • H-E08018
  • H-X1025
  • H-HSA12035
  • H-ES12060
  • H-FS12060
  • H-X2550
  • H-HSA35100
  • H-FSA45200
  • H-ES50200
  • H-FSA100300
  • H-RS100400

You can read more about the Lumix BGH1 on the Panasonic Expert Advice pages, and also learn how to stream via IP with the Lumix box cameras.
