The Green Certificate System and eneloop

As part of our participation in the Green Certificate system, we use solar power to charge eneloop batteries prior to sale.

Recharging your eneloop battery using solar energy will help in our aim of creating a “Clean Energy Loop”. The earth receives the same amount of clean, inexhaustible energy from in the sun in one hour as all the energy expended in the world in one year combined. We are working to find new ways for people to harness this power in their daily lives.

We still have a long way to go before we can rely solely on solar power, but it’s our ultimate goal to eventually be able to live on renewable energy. We want to reduce the cost of solar power, and increase the amount we can generate. The Green Certificate energy-trading system is one way we can work towards achieving both those goals.

We proudly participate in the Green Certificate program to help bring us all closer to a Clean Energy Loop lifestyle. Those who choose eneloop batteries can feel they are contributing, like us, to the future of solar power and a cleaner lifestyle.

While it might not happen overnight, we are taking significant steps towards a world powered by clean, sustainable energy, and a better future for our children.

Green Certificate Trading System

Electricity generated by renewable means has significant environmental value, such as reducing the amount of damaging carbon emissions put into the atmosphere, and the use of energy in a more efficient way.

By participating in the Green Certificate trading system, electricity consumers can own environmental “value” in tradable certificates by paying a premium on the regular price of electricity. The owner can then announce that fact to the public.

Purpose of Green Certificates

- Owning Green Certificates contributes to positive environmental action by companies and local governments that have difficulty in owning green power generating facilities.

- Electricity suppliers can sell the environmental value as Green Certificates, and use the money to invest in “green” power-generating facilities. This will eventually lead to an increase in the amount of green power available.

Note: The above specifications are based on the theoretical capacity of the battery and the consumption power rate of the equipment. Results may vary greatly depending on the conditions of use, models used, ambient temperature, and equipment condition. Runtime of eneloop product is measured with battery fully charged. Performance time may be shorter if the battery has been left unused for a period of time after being fully charged. All data is approximate. Runtime specifications may be different when eneloop is used with appliances not included in the table.

FAQ FAQ

Q

Is there a size difference between dry batteries and eneloop?

A

The dimensions of eneloop batteries are based on IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) standards, and are therefore suited for use in any IEC-approved appliance. However, in some rare cases, you might be unable to comfortably install the batteries. Don’t force the batteries inside as you might damage the container and cause overheating.

Q

Where’s the best place to store my eneloop batteries?

A

You can store them almost anywhere at room temperature, but don’t store them in humid conditions or in direct sunlight. Do not expose them to high temperatures. If stored fully charged, it’s possible to use them within about five years. However, we recommend giving stored batteries a charge once a year for optimal performance.

Q

How do I know when my battery is at the end of its usable life?

A

The occurrence of the symptoms below could indicate that your rechargeable batteries need replacing.
1. The battery has been used extensively over the last few years and its operating time has started to decrease after charging. As a guideline, if the operating time is cut in half, it is time to replace your rechargeable batteries.
2. If the charging of one battery poses a lot of difficulties e.g. when the charging time becomes increasingly longer. E.g. If it takes double the amount of time to charge a battery compared to other batteries of the same type, it is recommended to replace that particular rechargeable battery.
In the cases above, if a dead battery has to be replaced in an appliance, Panasonic urges its customers to replace all batteries in the used appliance to negate the possibility of overcharging the other batteries.
However, in the case of the defects below, the main cause could be an intermittent contact between battery and terminal.
1. Battery charge is never completed or takes a large amount of time (guideline: 2 to 3 times longer than normal charging time).
2. When the operating time is noticeably short despite having used the battery only a few times. In the cases above, it is recommended to clean the plus and minus terminals of the batteries, and the terminals of the charger with a cleaning cloth.

Q

Why has the operating time of my battery decreased so much?

A

The occurrence of the symptoms below could indicate that your rechargeable batteries need replacing.
· The battery has been used extensively over the last few years and its operating time has started to decrease after charging. As a guideline, if the operating time is cut in half, it is time to replace your rechargeable batteries.

Q

What could cause leakage in Ni-MH rechargeable batteries?

A

It is generally said that Ni-MH rechargeable batteries hardly leak, unlike alkaline batteries.
However, both alkaline and rechargeable batteries contain electrolyte, which could induce leakage when the batteries are used incorrectly.
There are certain wrongful uses which could cause a sudden rise in battery temperature that generates gas which cannot be absorbed within the battery case:
1. Forcefully discharging the batteries when they’re already over-discharged
2. Really high current discharging can cause a lot of heat and eventually leakage.
3. Short circuit discharging; the battery will become really hot and will eventually start leaking
4. Safety valve: in order to prevent the batteries from exploding, a safety valve is fitted in every battery to discharge the gas. When this gas is being discharged there is a possibility that the electrolyte will leak out.

Q

Can Ni-MH batteries be used for lights with a wire filament?

A

Ni-MH rechargeable batteries can be used for (torch) lights with a wire filament. Since the initial voltage in alkaline batteries (1.5V) decreases more quickly than in rechargeable batteries (1.2V), torches using Ni-MH will remain brighter for a longer period of time.
However, given the higher initial voltage level of alkaline batteries, these batteries will give a more intense light at the beginning of the service life of the batteries.

Q

What’s the difference between 1.5V and 1.2V?

A

1.5V is the nominal voltage for dry batteries, and nickel-metal hydride batteries (such as eneloop) have a nominal voltage of 1.2V. Dry batteries have a slightly higher voltage than the actual working voltage required by the appliance. Though the nickel-metal hydride battery is 1.2V, nickel-metal hydride batteries are able to provide similar performance to standard dry batteries. Basically, almost all appliances that require a dry battery can also use Ni-MH battery. Please be aware, though, of exceptional cases where only dry batteries can be used.

Note: In case of 500 mA discharge

Q

What is “memory effect”?

A

If Ni-Cd batteries and nickel-metal hydride batteries are repeatedly charged before the stored energy is used up, the battery “memorizes” the altered, decreased capacity. When you use it after that, the voltage decreases on the way. Sometimes this causes equipment to shut down. This is called the “memory effect”. The voltage of eneloop is higher than that of conventional nickel-metal hydride batteries, so even if the “memory effect” occuers, sufficient voltage is maintained. You can recharge the battery as required without concern about memory effect.

Q

What is “refresh function”?

A

This function is to remove memory effect. Even if the memory effect occurs, the voltage will recover if it is fully charged and fully discharged. It works by discharging the batteries first and then recharging the batteries to full capacity.
